Bill Willingham has been writing, and sometimes drawing, comics for more than 20 years. Played the game and really enjoyed it so I bought the comics and fell in love! They're so entertaining. I never want the books to end! It's so fun seeing in-depth background on childhood fables.

I've decided to try these comics out after completing The Wolf Among Us, which impressed me A LOT. This game said at the end: "continue fables stories with Fables comic books". I was never too much into serious adult comics, but I've decided to give it a try. First of all, I have to say, It's very easy to get into these stories after the game, but first time you have to get used to these drawings, which are diffirent from the game. After you get used - you're trapped. I've bought all nine deluxe books at the moment and finishing the 5th at the moment. These stories are really adult oriented, these characters are more brutal and tough in some ways.The first book is a great way to move your adventure from Wolf Among Us to Fables.The quality of the book itself is great, it is printed greatly. You can have some troubles from time to time to see the center between pages, but there's nothing to look for most of the times, just some decorative parts.These books series are all designed in the same way, so this Fables Deluxe collection will look absolutely great on your shelf.If you're new to this universe, I would personally recomend to complete the game (The Wolf Among Us) first and then buy a book. I think, you won't be disappointed!

Love this series! Traditional fairy tales are re-imagined into something completely new that allows all these characters to exist in the same world. There's a lot of fleshed out characters who develop throughout the series. The author knows how to keep you turning pages by always dangling something fantastic just up ahead. The journey of Fabletown and it's many citizens is better than other attempts at the idea of fairy tales characters living in our world.Side note: the deluxe editions are great value because they not only come with the main series issues but also side stories from the same universe. There are A LOT of Fables side stories and the inclusion in the deluxe editions makes it not only less overwhelming but they tend to be placed chronologically. So while the side stories are not required to understand the main arcs, the deluxe editions place them in a way that makes it easy to understand the events that are happening elsewhere in the universe at the same time.

This is an absurdly creative graphic novel equal in calibre to the works of Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman. The oversize deluxe edition with gorgeous dust cover is a fabulous way of reading this sweeping epic of fable fantasy for mature audiences, especially if you are a first time reader like me. When you consider the price of comics these days, this is a high value way of collecting this series since each edition has close to 10 comics and can be found on Amazon at about 40% of MSRP (or around $16 each + shipping). The comics are printed on high quality paper and the print quality is superb. The binding is glued which is not a problem given the size of the publication; it is of course problematic for the larger DC omnibus or absolute editions. Sometimes the comic is printed a little too close to the binding making it difficult to read, but these occurrences are rare. This a much high value product than the DC archives series which retails for $49.95 or higher. My only real complaint is the use of multiple artists on the same fable character across this epic. This normally would not be a problem if the artwork were equal across artists and if there was little variation in how the characters are portrayed. Some artwork is brilliant and some downright crude. Finally some of the stories are trite and should have been omitted. But overall we can ignore these disappointments. I definitely will collect the entire series.

These books are among some of my favorite things I own in my whole house. If my house burned down and my cat was safe, I'd probably grab these books if I could! That's probably untrue, but my point is I love them! I've always connected with fairy tales and stories, and it's the one thing I remember about my childhood being totally invested in. These books spoke to me since I heard about them and every moment when I'm reading them I just feel at home. Even during the scenes that aren't totally compelling, I feel like I'm the most comfortable I could possible be when I have one of these cracked open. I'm reading them at such a slow pace it's laughable, but I'm trying to make this feeling last, since you just can't experience something for the first time a second time! If you have any interest in those fairy tales you grew up with, I recommend you give them a chance!

I like Joel Goldman a lot. I understand that lawyers don't go around solving murders, getting shot at, beat up, and acting like the stereotypical private eye. I get that. What I do like though, are the characters and their development in his books. Between Mason and his co-stars, Blues, Harry, Claire, Rachel, and now Mickey, Goldman puts togrther as kookie a group of characters as one is likely to find in mysteries and thrillers. Goldman humanizes his characters, gives them distinct personalities and senses of humor, and ties them all together with fun and entertaining plots. These characters include Lou, the prototypical crime-solving lawyer; his aunt, who raised him and a very ethical lawyer; Harry, her boyfriend of many years and Lou's surrogate father and senior detective; Blues, a former cop, bar owner, PI and semi violent protector and landlord; Rachel, a knockout lesbian reporter and semi-confidant that drives Lou's libido crazy; and now, Micky, a zany resident gofer and sometimes genius. They are all bound together with excellent storytelling, humor, sarcasm, and genuine care for each other.This story is about corruption inside and outside city government going back almost 100 years, murder, false accusations and imprisonment, liars, semi-mafioso thugs and corruptor's, and all kinds of twists and turns. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I have now read three Lou Mason books and Joel Goldman is rapidly becoming one of my favorite writers. I love the characters, especially Lou's Aunt Clair and Blue and appreciate his clean, spare, and often humorous writing. When men write fiction they tend to inject a few too many of their own fantasies into the main character, coming up with superheros and ridiculously proficient swordsmen. While Goldman does a little of this, Lou Mason has his flaws (which his aunt is only too willing to point out) and doesn't always get the girl - although he gets his share.I suggest reading the Mason series in order if you can. It isn't fatal to do otherwise but I just finished Last Witness and could anticipate some of the outcome because I had read book five out of order. Still enjoyed it however.

Good book.. I'm a big fan of Lee Child and his gritty characters and I became an instant fan of Golman's books and his protagonist Lou Mason. Mason is a flawed and sarcastic character. His life is threatened a bit too much for my taste simply because he's always an unsuspecting target and magically escapes death's door. Still, I like the character and flow of these stories. Effortless reading with enough twists and surprises to keep you engaged.. I suggest buying the series and reading them in order since characters are developed through each.

It's an interesting enough tale - but hardly matches the sub-title of being a 'thriller'!The author has a truly vivid imagination and incorporates a plethora of twists-and-turns to the plot to keep the reader involved - but all that really achieves is to increase the word count.Still - the telling compels the reader to persevere, and to endure it to the last convolution and stick with it until the end.This is another book where the rating is difficult based on a maximum of 5 stars - I gave it 3/5 - but it would be more like an 8/10.

Excellent read. I didn't read book one but I intend to read it now as well as other books by Joel Goldman. Three of his characters, Blue, Harry and Mason's aunt Claire fit well around Mason, the main character. Mickey, a support character definitely has a undisclosed background. Rachel will surely become more than what she appears to be.Joel Goldman can spin a story as well as other successful authors. Mr. Goldman has his own witty style that will set him apart from other writers. He is a natural who is not immating any other.

A local mover and shaker is gunned down and Lou Mason's buddy, confidante, and sometime investigator is arrested for murder. The prosecutors appear to have "Blues" Bluestone dead to rights, and the only way Mason can figure out how to defend him is to try to find the real killer.THE LAST WITNESS is the second in this highly entertaining series and shows the progression of Joel Goldman as a writer. The author seems much more sure of himself this time around.Mason's a great character. Funny, smart and tough when it's called for. In LAST WITNESS, we get to see Mason at work in and around the courtroom, and it's a consummation devoutly to be wished. He's a sure-handed attorney, and it's good fun watching Mason ply his real trade.The language is utilitarian, the storytelling is sometimes clumsy, the subsidiary characters occasionally confuse, but all-in-all, it doesn't matter. The book is good and Mason is compelling, and it's easy to recommend. I look forward to mowing down the whole series.

Attorney Lou Mason has to solve a murder and bring down a corrupt city government to get an innocent client out of jail. This he does with verve and wit, but thankfully, without the obligatory trial in which the client is proven innocent and the perp guilty. The writing is a mixture of correct and incorrect grammar as if two authors or two proofreaders had been involved. This is disconcerting in an otherwise readable book.

It was an OK read for me- It was my first by the author and even though it was book 2 in a series I would say it certainly was a stand alone book- It is listed as a "Thriller" but honestly just didn't come across as such for me- Poor editing and mistakes EX: a $150 dinner is referred to as a lunch when character had already had lunch with his Aunt- Didn't have much depth for most characters- It was also what I would call a short read-

I first made the author’s recipes in her Beeswax Alchemy book and fell in love with it! I am so excited about Beehive Alchemy because it has even more recipes and such a wide variety of projects! You won’t be disappointed.

Beehive Alchemy: Projects and recipes is a new recipe/DIY/how-to book from Petra Ahnert. Released 21st August 2018 by Quarto publishing group's Quarry imprint, it's 160 pages and available in flexibind paperback and ebook formats.This is a good basic how-to guide for beecrafting. The book is well photographed in color and arranged logically in chapters with recipes grouped around the area of use- bodycare, candles, home use (including a solid recipe for furniture polish, a classic - you never forget that smell), studio projects (batik, multimedia), foods, etc. This book has a short intro, a usable index at the back, and some useful appendices which provide conversions for baking, info on various oils used in the bodycare recipes and their properties, some safety info with links to online lye calculators for the soap projects, along with a short bio. There are links to online resources scattered throughout the book; most are aimed at North American readers.There's nothing truly groundbreaking here, but it's always nice to add to the apiary and crafting libraries and this particular book fills a niche (crafting with bee products) which isn't overcrowded. The skincare products are wholesome and down to earth and safe. The crafting projects are fun and appealing. Bonus points for being the first bee book in my experience to include batik projects. The cooking recipes are tasty and versatile and trend toward the high end (pistachio & honey chevre is simple but just about guaranteed to impress).The author's writing style is friendly and acccessible.Three and a half stars.Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

For me, good honey is simply delicious and unrefined beeswax smells like heaven. That is why I picked up Beehive Alchemy by Petra Ahnert. Petra generously shares her well researched knowledge about everything that has to do with bees and how to make good use of honey, beeswax, propolis, and pollen. Of special interest to me is chapter 2 with all kinds of body care products. Petra Ahnert's detailed descriptions of the role of bee products and other ingredients in body care speak volumes of her experience in this matter. One good example is her recipe for Olive and Honey Lotion. She describes exactly the same problems I ran into when trying to make lotion with borax as an emulsifier and presents a foolproof recipe instead that produces a stable emulsion which does not separate or go bad after just a few days. This example truly sets Petra's recipes apart from so many recipes you can find online or in a lot of natural cosmetics books. There are many other good ideas that are presented in this book. Here are the five things I would like to make first: the Olive and Honey Lotion, the Liquid Soap with Honey, the Waxed Cotton Food Wraps, the Rustic Dutch Oven Bread, and the Pistachio and Honey Chevre Log. And then I might make... (I do not know yet. It is very hard to decide between all of those good choices!)

with all the news of the demise of the everyday honey bee and what it will mean to us, Petra Ahnert has chosen to give us a look into another side of bees. We have a large farm and had been considering setting up a couple of hives but were not sure what to do with them, other than honey. This book contains so much information along with numerous suggestions for every bee by product, that the benefits of bee keeping far out weigh the difficulty of learning this skill. She has given me a new look at what the world of bees can do for us.

It notes that beekeeping is growing in popularity and says this guide shares easy-to-follow details for concocting your own candles, cookies, cough drops, soap, creams, and salves. Follows the high success of author Petra Ahnert's best-selling BEESWAX ALCHEMY. The cover and what photography I could see were gorgeous, however, formatting issues prevented my seeing any text. I received an Advanced Reader Copy from Quarry Books for my unbiased opinion of the book. I LOVED THIS BOOK. The colorful pictures, layout, all the information, and recipes. Petra did a great job putting it together and it is a great all things bee reference book. I will be using it for years. I will be giving this book to family and friends for gifts in the new year!
