Very easy reading as we walk in the shoes of Rusty Firmin...a young man with no family support or structure who ends up in one of the world's most elite military units. His focus and determination in those early years is inspirational; he sees things as a challenge to which he rises, not as barriers put in his way. You can see his determination and confidence grow with each accomplishment.We are given an insight into the Iranian embassy siege as well as the Falklands war....all in all, this is one of the more interesting Special forces books I have read and it was very difficult to put down.

A straightforward honest autobiography of the authors fifteen years in the SAS. It provides a full insight of the author's time, both on duty and off duty and reflections of his time in service. I would love to see a sequel of his time after the SAS.

An enjoyable if light run through the author’s illustrious career in the SAS. The author was clearly a talented and dedicated warrior who even managed to find some time between beers to do some good work for queen and country.

Excellent for candor and that unique British humor and perspective that distinguishes the Brits from all other nationalities. I was attached to a British Army unit in 1968, and this brings back fond memories.

Excellent narrative of the authors service in the SAS. Particularly interesting was his account of the assault on the Iranian Embassy in London, 1980.

Authentic feel but not a gifted writer and a bit too padded with not particularly interesting anecdotes

I love this book. Rusty Firmin does a great job here...held my interest, informative as heck, and is just a great all around book!

Read this over two days. Enjoyed it immensely and was interesting to delve into the mind of an SAS member. I put the book down thinking that I'd love to have a pint with the author.

Herbert Benson, MD, is the Mind Body Medical Institute Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School. He is the author of the mega-bestselling book, The Relaxation Response, as well as ten other trade books. His groundbreaking work established the modern field of mind body medicine. Like Timeless Healing, he covers some history. In Relaxation Revolution" he writes about the 3 leading scientist of the 19th century: Louis Pasteur, Joseph Lister, and Robert Koch and the important roles they had in the early developing of medical science. He tells about the development of vaccinations and how early pharmaceuticals and treatments were discovered and used. He discussed various illnesses such as: TB, scurvy, pneumonia, malaria and treatments for them. I enjoyed his discussion of the clinical studies on how mind body medicine effected genes. The long term practitioners of the mind body medicine have experienced the switching on and off of "gene expression signatures". This results in healing and health benefits. He gives the instructions of how to elicit the relaxation response by practicing the simple mediation excise he describes. He list the types of illnesses that can be treated with this approach. There are chapters giving more details and treating some specific conditions. Herbert Benson's books are worth reading

I read the Relaxation Response when it was published many years ago and have followed Herbert Benson's research on the Mind/Body Connection throughout the years. Herbert Benson was a pioneer in this field when the mind/body connection was definitely not mainstream thinking. This book is a continuation of the benefits that we can achieve when we understand how our negative or positive thoughts affect our bodies and our health. The book furthers our understanding on the Mind/Body Connection and provides the tools to improve our lives.

This soon-to-be seminal work on the importance of the relaxation response is a must read for all healthcare professionals. The book captures the outcomes from over 40 years of the scientific research efforts of the Benson-Henry Institute out of Harvard Medical School, and yet is readable for non-healthcare professionals and lay persons who are interested in learning more about how to care themselves holistically. Of particular interest is the impact that just a few minutes of meditation per day has on our bodies' genetic structures; yes meditation can prevent genetic and stress induced epigenetic illness from manifesting.Every primary care provider, surgeon, specialty care provider, and hospital system should look toward this book as a resource to support their patients in the healing process and also to prevent post-hospitalization stress syndrome, which is likely one of the leading causes of re-hospitalization. I thought this book failed on all levels. Benson makes gargantuan claims that Mind-Body healing has been proven scientifically, to such a degree that it is equally as reliable as medicine or even surgery. He makes this claim multiple times, but fails to support it.First of all, Benson seems to confuse alleviation of pain, with healing. Many of the cases/studies on which his claims are hinged, result in nothing more than the patients/subjects feeling less pain as a result. This is a good thing I suppose, but not only does this do nothing to support the 'healing' claim, but it is also entirely subjective (I picture patients pointing to a happy face chart) and therefore unreliable.The studies he he uses are flimsy, poorly conducted, and provide only vague, and usually subjective results. They usually have fewer than 20 participants, and for most of them, his Relaxation Method is only one of a collection of variables introduced simultaneously, which does not stop Benson from chalking up any apparent promising results to his method alone. Aside from these studies, he also cites a handful of placebo studies conducted over the last 40 years.What follows is the entirety of his "scientific evidence" for Mind-Body Healing:-GENE EXPRESSION: The Crown Jewel of his work, and what most of his exuberant claims are based on, is a study he conducts with only 38 participants divided into two groups. One of average Joes, and one of "experience meditative practitioners." The result: after weeks of undergoing his Relaxation Response method, the group of Joe's saw a change in Gene Expression in genes that are "associated with stress related medical problems," and this change mimicked the gene expression of the experience meditators.He of course fails to specify whether or not this change in expression actually amounts to anything, or even what effects these genes have on "stress related conditions" be it good or bad. What we're left with is a vague notion that meditation has some kind of an effect on genes that are "associated" with stress related conditions.-HYPERTENSION: In 1974 (yes, 40 years ago) he conducted an experiment with only 14 subjects, who after undergoing his prescribed meditative methods for 20 weeks experienced an average decrease in blood pressure from 145mm to 135mm.-HYPERTENSION: In 2008 122 patients were split into two groups. One prescribed diet, exercise, weight loss, and lifestyle modification, while the other received all of the above, plus training in the Relaxation Response method. Both groups' blood pressure readings improved dramatically (fancy that). In regards to the Relaxation Response group, he reports only this: "the rr patients were much more likely to be successful in eliminating antihypertensive medication." What does this mean? No numbers. No stats. Nothing concrete.-INSOMNIA: In 1993, in a study of 20 participants suffering from insomnia, half educate in sleep hygiene, and half in both sleep hygiene and the Relaxation Response, again, both groups improved dramatically. The average onset of sleep time dropped by about 40-50 minutes for both groups. The only difference being the RR group averaged a quicker average onset of sleep time. 18 minutes instead of 28.-IMSOMNIA: In another study, this time including 102 participants, 92% percent were able to "eliminate or reduce their use of sleep drugs." That's as specific as he gets. He also mentions that this study also included stimulus control, and behavior techniques, but of course Benson chalks the results up to his relaxation response method.-IRREGULAR HEARTBEATS: Random. This study using only 11 patients, resulted in another vague report of a "reduced frequency of PVC's in eight of the 11 patients." Reduced frequency? From 1million to seven? From 44 to 43? From 1 to 0? He doesn't specify. Just celebrates another victory for the RR method.-PMS: A study that showed a 58% improvement in the symptoms of 46 women. Whatever that means.-INFERTILITY: Ok this is getting odd. 54 women who were infertile for an average of 3.3 years, are taught the RR method, and of course various other methods to alleviate stress in their lives. Within 6 months 34% of them became pregnant. So many problems with this study. Aside from the less than astounding result, there are far too many variables at play to make any kind of correlational tie between the RR and the 34% who became pregnant.-NITRIC OXIDE??: A random mention, with no studies, statistics, or evidence of any kind provided, that the body's output of Nitric Oxide "a molecule associated with good health" is increased through meditation. Which means what exactly?-PAIN: The rest of the studies and stories in the book have to do with pain. Most are placebo studies done over the last 40 years, in which the participants reports less pain after various placebo treatments. Which of course in no way supports the case for Mind Body healing, as pain management and healing are two very different things. These studies also assume that patients can articulate their pain levels in a manner both accurate and objective enough to be used as scientific 'evidence.'-PARKINSON'S: This study had no business in this book. Two groups are subjected to surgery, with one group receiving 'placebo' surgery. The only results are higher scores on 'quality of life' measurements, and unspecific improvement of physical symptoms, by those who believed they had corrective surgery. He then goes on to say "The longer term therapeutic value remains to be established." And yet literally two lines later says this "These results demonstrate the tremendous power of the mind through the mechanism of the belief system. This affinity for exaggeration is present throughout the book.CANCER: The final study in the book is by far the most poorly conducted, has the most ambiguous results, and yet still makes the grandest assumptions. Using the results from the first study of gene expression, Benson compared gene expressions of the meditation practitioners to those of patients in a "cancer database," and determined that the expression of certain sets of genes "associated with cancer" in the meditation practitioners were "counter" to various gene expressions in cancer patients. He then uses this kernel of possibility as a spring board for making claims that his method could benefit cancer patients, and even prescribes it to a patient of his. The results: his patient "felt less anxious, and his itching symptoms had lessened." Benson then goes on to basically praise himself for opening the door to cancer treatment using meditation.The rest of the book is a how-to guide for treating the aforementioned conditions and a few others, as well as a "possibilities" chapter. Considering the shakiness of the 'science' I didn't feel the chapter openly advertising itself as hypothetical would hold any weight to it.Overall I was very disappointed in this book. All I got from it was this: The Relaxation Response has been scientifically proven to maybe, possibly, alleviate some of your pain, after weeks and weeks of daily meditation. And one day, it will cure cancer.

The main message in this book could be summarized in two pages. Then the authors go on repeating it over and over for 200 pages. Lots of stuff, while interesting, is no something the reader of this kind of material would be interested on.

Much has been learned since the publication of the original Relaxation Response. New research has found that meditation has beneficial effects on genetic expression. Detailed approaches are offered for treating a wide variety of conditions. It appears that we are at the beginning of a new era of medicine.

Seller was awesome. However, book had interesting background information but when I got down to the nitty gritty, basically, a few pages was all I needed and that info is all over the internet. Glad I didn't pay full price for it.

After years of not performing the guitar, I picked it up along with this book and got to work learning all those open tunings for Joni Mitchell songs which I never was able to figure out when I was a teenager, because no one had written it all down! Now, her guitar technician has created this invaluable resource for anyone wishing to delve into her fascinating and infinitely satisfying guitar work. Though I have been a classical singer for decades, upon seeing this book I threw caution to the wind and booked myself a performance gig of all Joni Mitchell songs. Then, I got to work using this book. Don’t be fooled, this is a very professional rendering of her work – not for the faint of heart. But, oh! It is so rewarding! I learned, for instance, that Joni Mitchell had had polio when she was eight years old and that all of the open tunings were her attempt to overcome a weakness in her hands which was a residual effect of the illness. The altered tunings also release an extraordinary color palette and expressive capability for the guitar which is simply not possible if you don’t alter the tunings. It has been a joy to finally perform these as they were meant to be performed. One weakness of the book is the dulcimer tunings for the four “Blue“ album songs; they appear to be inaccurate or nonexistent in some cases. Luckily, there are plenty of excellent videos on YouTube with dulcimer players playing the songs and explaining the tunings. I was able to come up with dulcimer tunings that work for me. If you love Joni Mitchell, treat yourself to this eye-opening manual — you won’t be disappointed!

I like Joni Mitchell's music. When I heard that she was a devotee of open tunings, I knew that this book held, for me, glimpses into her compositional brilliance. Having adapted to open tuning through the use of both banjo and ukulele, guitar open tuning and my own interpretation of slack key seems to have followed very naturally. Anyone may have their open key knowledge base expanded through the use of this book filled with Joni's songs, her chording graphics and easily understood explanations of a number of open tuning options available to an artist.

Just what I was looking for. This book goes into detail about Joni's tunings and the sheet music does not disappoint. A very attractive package with photos, lyrics and notation of this singular artist and her exquisite legacy. I've played guitar for a long time and have some skills. This book makes her music accessible to play.

I'm still trying to approach my guitar right now. I have taken a look at some of the pages in the book, and it's a nice book obviously. It has arranged Joni Mitchell's songs in the "album" order so you can easily find the piece you want to play. It's exciting to think about that I will be able to play Joni's songs all by myself!

Love how this is indexed with songs in alphabetical order and the release album they came from. There are some really cool pictures at the beginning of the book, it features a tuning index with all of her guitar tunings and the songs also feature her tablature. Hope to spend some time as a newly retired teacher relearning (accurately) some old and new songs.

Quite nice actually! For a Joni-head, this book is deep, is a river, is true. Very nicely put together. The transcriptions are very well done! It is not a note-for-note transcription from beginning to end of each song, but rather and more useful, the transcriptions offer a guide through authentically playing the song, its setting and character with vocal line and lyrics with the guitar transcriptions providing the pocket. Careful thought has been giving to how the music score fits on a page, where page turns are, binding so the book lies flat. It is wonderful!

What a waste of money. The tunings are not accurate. The tab only covers the intros. Guess the pictures were ok...

Beautiful book. All the mystery tunings and tabs. Great photos. Nice preface. Very pleased with it!!
