Dystopian novels are a fine balancing act, because the author has to create a world and a backstory that is both believable and enveloping. CUT is just that. Set in a not-so-distant future that is a direct result of some of the things we are experiencing now (climate change, disease, violence), CUT tells the story of Micka, a suicidal teen who is chosen for a position of honor that will require her to question everything and stay true to herself. The problem is, everything she's been told is a lie, and she's not quite sure who she is.So, full disclosure, I am that person who reads spoilers and skips ahead, so I've read some of the development Micka experiences in book 2, but Ms. Wendeberg does a fine job introducing Micka in CUT, making her world believable (which should actually scare anyone who connects the author's background and passion as a scientist to environmental current events) and creating an urgency in you to know what happens next. The story builds, so there is no resolution at the end the book--no, CUT simply introduces Micka and her world and prepares you for where she is going. There were some reviewers who objected to the present tense to Micka's first sexual encounter (which was same-sex) to the suicidal tropes. This story is not for everyone, but if you enjoy a well-written, well-developed story, you will enjoy CUT.

I am writing this after finishing the third and latest book in the series (Ice). Typically I read Amazon reviews to determine if I want to start a series and commit the time, money, emotion etc. As this series starts here with 1/2986, I figured that this review should answer that question. The answer is simple: this series is absolutely worth the time, effort and investment (both financial and emotional). I tend to think that reviews that summarize the story are typically not very helpful and there are plenty reviews below that have already done that. I want to focus on the quality of the writing, the flow of the plot and the characters brought to life. Ms. Wendeberg has done a spectacular job in all of these areas. The story moves, the written structure is excellent, the verbal and inner dialog are very real and the portrayal of emotion, conflict, attachment, love and hate that are normally pretty hard to pull off are done with mastery. A small caveat, this story is not for the faint of heart. The monsters are monsters. The lovers are lovers. Reality is sometimes too real. Without giving anything away, I can tell you there are scenes of both intense villainy and love (sometimes in the same paragraph) in the third book (Ice, Fog is #2) that alone are worth reading this series. I cannot wait for book #4. So, again, the question is whether or not this series is one to start. I say with certainty, load this on your Kindle, you will not be disappointed.

Mickaela isn’t a good student. She’s a crackerjack mechanic, but as a girl, and a poor student to boot, there’s no way she’ll be allowed to work as a mechanic. So, she’s decided she might as well kill herself. Then, visiting the generator, she encounters the new Sequencer, an enigmatic official who is feared and respected by everyone in the scattered settlements, which are all that’s left of Earth’s population. She’s stunned when he suggests that she consider becoming his apprentice, a position that means the village idiot would become the most respected resident—and, her family will finally have reason to be proud of her. She accepts, with some trepidation, which is completely warranted, because she might not even survive the apprenticeship.1/2986 by Annelie Wendeberg is a post-apocalyptic novel of an Earth that has been almost depopulated. What’s left of humanity is consigned to small settlements where obeying the rules, no matter how senseless, is the most valuable trait, and the only people with a sense of the world as an entity are the Sequencers; mysterious people who move from settlement to settlement, ‘inspecting,’ and who knows what else.A tightly-written tale with characters that are easy to identify with and have empathy for. It’s science fiction, but given the current state of the world and its environment, it rings all too true.

This is a fantastic book which took me by surprise. Mickaela, the protagonist, is not your everyday girl. She has suffered at the hands of her family and herself. She also has synesthesia, a condition where words have taste. Taste is very important to the character, effecting the way she perceives the world. I do not have synethesia, but I felt a lot of understanding toward Mickaela and her struggles with trying to understand her own self-worth.Her relationship with the other people in the story was complex. Her family and the dark past they shared was heartbreaking. Runner and her connection to him was both complicated and realistic. Their emotional attachment and teacher / student bond brings such a strong human element to Mickaela's life that was lacking living in a town full of people. The story moves at a fast pace. There are moments of quiet and moments of intense action. The world post Cholera is vivid and terrifying. It reminds us that we are not as safe as we pretend to be in our world, and that the smallest microbes could be the downfall of civilization.
