There are several glaring mistakes that I’ve spotted already (James Blish is NOT an English writer; he’s an American who lived in England for the final 7 or so years of his life.) But Cushman is not one to quibble over details, and never has been. So, don’t assume his details are accurate. But the real issue is the horrible formatting of the Kindle version. Sentence fragments float willy-nilly on the pages. Paragraphs start and end in the middle of sentences. None of what are apparently meant to be footnote references work - they’re not hyperlinked to anything. For a $20 ebook, readers would expect, at very least, a readable text. We don’t get it here.Don’t buy this book unless and until the publisher fixes it.

Sure, I dearly loved the three previous Cushman's Star Trek volumes, chalk full of detail and analysis and written in a wonderful style. The same approach is used here, but honestly the source material is simply not very compelling. Genesis II, Strange New World, and Planet Earth weren't very good when they first came on, so an extended analysis of each of these failures falls flat. And while I dimly remember the TV movie about Questor, again the show never got off the ground, so again the extended discussion there is mainly about things that never came into being. The sections on the animated series were interesting, but again - while they are tangentially interesting and much advanced compared to kiddie fare of the era, these are still kiddie shows, with a short running time and basic plots. Finally, the discussion about Star Trek's resurgence is already well documented, so you will find little new here on that topic. In short, I liked the book, recommend it for fans, but it simply isn't as interesting cause the events of 1970-1975 were not as interesting.P.S. There is also a section on what the various actors were doing after Star Trek but other than Shatner and Nimoy these parts will just make you sad.

The formatting of this book is terrible, with the first chapter among the worst I have seen in a Kindle text. Paragraphs are mis-inserted in sections. It’s embarrassing for the author and publishers to have released this. It’s really disappointing for a $20 book. I would like to request the publisher be contacted and a fixed edition be given to purchasers.

First, let me say that I own Marc Cushman's other three TOS and they do a service to Star Trek's history and tradition that few other books can match. It's not written solely for the casual fan, the nostalgia boomer, or the convention enthusiast. It is a scholarly (but VERY relevant) work that examines the Historical, Economic, Sociological forces that made the franchise (for both better and worse) what it was. I initially had concerns that there might be sections of the book that might not be as interesting because they weren't "100% Star Trek-100% of the time". But the scope of the three TOS books were FAR broader than those narrow fields of view (and are better for it) as well. For fans of the "mythology" of the series, EACH episode of the animated series is exacting in its detail, with accounts collated from many different sources about how each came to be. For my money, I found the accounting of details concerning the "cross-pollination" of Star Trek's mythology and (Science Fiction Author) Larry Niven's "Ringworld" mythology to be CAPTIVATING. Some of those animated series episodes are better than others, and some are somewhat derivative of TOS episodes, but the book does a good job of maintaining its critical veracity there as well. Where praise is deserving, their observations are SPOT ON. All of Mr. Cushman's books (that I've read) have a nearly unique ability to transport me back to that place and that TIME in ways that don't just help me place where I was and what I was doing (I was a kid, that makes it a heavier lift than it is for adults, at least IMO), but also serve as a point of reference for what was affecting my life in ways that (Star Trek aside) I probably didn't have clear insight into at the time. In some ways, it's as close to a virtual time machine for the reader as I'm likely to ever encounter. But since THAT'S now addressed, let me mention the pleasant surprises: I had little recollection of Roddenberry's associations with the production of the Motion Picture "Pretty Maids All In A Row". At first blush, I was tempted to skim through it, but once I got through the first few pages, I found it to be every bit as informative and enlightening as the other sections. The scholarship and listing of references makes its value as a REFERENCE tool for how Television worked (and didn't, then and most likely even now) is the reason it should be on any person's shelf who values (and wishes to support) SUBSTANTIVE renderings on all things tangential to our common Post-Modern Cultural heritage. If you dislike being talked down TO, this book is for you. It won't insult your intelligence. In that way, it's like the series itself, at least in its best moments. It treats the reader with sobriety and a dignity that I personally find rare these days. The other sections of the book grace us with detailed recollections of the syndication phenomenon of which we were all a part, "Genesis II" (which I remembered for decades after I saw it-few believed me when I told them that "Dylan Hunt" was a creation of Roddenberry's long BEFORE Andromeda), "Earth 2" and "The Questor Tapes". Those sections are as entertaining and informative as the other sections are. I only knew of "The Questor Tapes" from Roddenberry's comments about it on the CBS "Star Trek" LP from the '70s. So to summarize: When I first ordered my copy, I was concerned that there might be some "filler" in this book as the time frame covered within its scope was considered a "low point" in the franchise's History. It turns out that it's one of the MOST interesting times, for exactly the same reason. I heartily recommend it and not JUST for Star Trek enthusiasts. Serious students of Entertainment Media and the Communications Industry will find much of use in it. And, lest I forget, it's just plain fun to READ! I still think Mr. Cushman should prioritize a like this for the "Wild, Wild West". Some of the same people (if I read my credits correctly) were involved in both series.

The writing in this book is terrible, it just rambles on and on with no real direction. I'm seriously considering cutting out the pages and just keeping the picture dictionary portion. The dictionary takes up about half the book and is really clear and useful.

I purchased this when I realized my baby was not being very vocal. I used the signs like more and milk to help my son communicate and it was extremely helpful! My son is now 3 and I am still using this book to teach him; we are currently working on the alphabet. I intend to teach him signing as a full second language and this book is great for the beginning stages! I highly recommended this book as it was so helpful to me. The illustrations are fantastic as they use toddlers instead of adults.

The part in the front is great and gives some ideas on what to expect and reasons behind the development involved in signing. It also includes some great ideas for songs and games to introduce signs. The pictures in the back are hands down (pun unintended) the best asl pictures I've ever seen, and include written descriptions as well as ways to remember the sign, like a reason behind why the sign is what it is, that makes enough sense to be much easier to remember.

My daughter is teaching our younger boys signs- way more than I have the patience to sit down and do! We got quite a few books from the library and this is by far her favorite. Nice and simple, clear signs, alphabetical. Very easy to find some of the most common words for little ones. We also enjoyed the songs section and have picked up quite a few signs from signing songs together.

I love how this book lays out all the developmental milestones of each age group for babies and explains how they learn things in details. Has been a huge help with teaching my 6mo old ASL

I think the book is a bit repetitive, but it takes at least 21 times before something becomes a habit. Overall the book is very encouraging, I feel like its full of antidotes once you get past that it's great. I Started signing with my baby at 11 months, he picked it up very quickly, although not very consistent. He knows Ball (signed it at the store, so I bought it for him) He also signs more for everything.

Easy to understand baby signing. My 4mo old baby seems to understand “milk” only but we will continue working on more. Wish words were sorted in categories like greetings, family members and animals as well as existing alphabetical order index.

This book was great. It has a lot of in-depth information at the front end, but if you want to skip to the back to the signing dictionary it has lots of signs to teach your little one. I also love the stories that are within the book of examples of how parents and their children are using sign to communicate thoughts that they otherwise would not have been able to. This is a great book for my family's needs.
