It's about sharing stories, and reading, and all the good that comes with that.From a library worker perspective, this is perfect for story time. The illustrations are simple yet detailed, if that even makes sense. They definitely add to the story. It is short enough to keep the attention of young listeners while still telling quite a big story. I can't wait to share!

Great story about an awful event and provides a thorough review of how cases proceed and navigate. The problem is the authors’ writing style. They repeat themselves to ad nauseam. Likewise, the authors struggle with paragraph development. Many themes take a hard left mid paragraph, only to be repeated three more times. Tragic story and educational value: 5 stars. Writing style: Two and 3/4 stars. It was a GREAT 250 page book that lasted 400 pages.

Class Action is one of the best books I have ever read. I simply could not put it down once I started reading it. The story, itself, is gripping. If this were a work of fiction, it would stretch the imagination to believe that such things could happen. The fact that this is a true story just stuns the reader to the depth of the soul. But, beyond the nature of the story, is the excellent writing. It is as engrossing as the best novel - cohesive, fast paced & intelligble. There is just enough legal background and explanation given to make the events understandable to the lay person without making the book a lesson in Civil Procedure. I cannot recommend this book too highly. Thank you to the authors for bringing this story to the public in such an empathetic and understandable way, and to the women of the story who changed the lives of all human beings for the better.

Extremely well written that it provides a historical record. We forget how far we've come and those who fought before us.

Excellent book. Written very fast-paced while giving a ton of detail.

I assume that you will have seen the Movie first. I would have never heard of this book, without references in the DVD. BUT it is not necessary that you see the movie first. AND if you see the movie after reading the book be prepared for differences. But aside from comparisons, this is a terrific read about the first successful Sexual Harrassment case in the USA. It is set in the North Country made famous by Mr. Zimmerman. In fact some of the scenes and some of the characters are from Hibbing. Hero is one of the many misused words in Americana. But hero could be safely applied to the Lawyers who defended Lois Jenen.

This is a great read, a page turner, and heartbreaking saga of women's endurance and sacrafice.

My wife was high school best friends with the heroine of this story. Ergo, I have access to more complete information than revealed in this story.Still, it is much more fact than fiction, despite the 'poetic license' sometimes exhibited by the author. Sometimes the author was simply denied access to the whole truth. In the end, the story unwinds in this book much as it did in real life, but some of the details aren't always right on target.This was a landmark legal case that changed things on a national scale, and as such it can be viewed as history.And the history as put forth in this story is clearly more accurate than what was presented in the movie "North Country", which is another telling of the same tale.The writing is good enough to carry the book, even if it were totally fiction. But it's not -- I can recommend it.

Donald R. Burleson brought a new look at the various tales written by the father and master of modern horror, H.P.Lovecraft. He dives into a number of tales and steadily deconstructs them piece by piece. In doing so I was shown as aspect of the tales in which I had never looked at or thought about before. Generally first by closely observing what is going on in each tale followed by seeping into even tinnier details such as word choice and the historical roots in language.This book is not for the casual reader, rather for those interested in the study of Lovecraft and his work.

This is a book that you will either toss aside with a shrug, or that will keep you enthralled for a couple of reading evenings. There's no real middle way. Still, for Lovecraftians it is a must-have must-read.Burleson applies deconstruction to the texts in a marvellous way, and yet at the same time it sometimes also becomes rather repetitive. But this is so because deconstruction is (in my opinion) also a methodology. At any rate, this book is an eye-opener to the province of the text and how it will never allow itself to be pigeon-holed, or to be fully understood, or to reach a definite interpretation. As Burleson points out texts are always self-subversive, and arrive at aporetic standstills, though simultaneously also lifting the tip on infinity within the text. And where could one do that better than 'in' Lovecraft?From the opening introduction on deconstructianism, which is very lucid and should be understandable by readers that have not encountered it before, to the final concluding chapter, this book is like spit and mud in your eyes that should be washed in a stream after finishing it, and then to read the book again. You will not only regard Lovecraft 'texts' differently, but also every other text you encounter or re-read will never be the same again.The stories selected for the deconstructive criticism ("The Call of Cthulhu", "The Shadow over Innsmouth", "The Cats of Ulthar", "The Nameless City", and more short ones) are representative for Lovecraft's recurring themes and motifs, and handled in clear understandable speech and intellectuality. My only complaint with this book is that it is a bit too short - I would have liked to see more attention to the stories, but this is a dilemma for which Burleson doubtlessly stood himself: it is a decision between fewer stories thoroughly (as far as that can be done with deconstructionism) explored, and more stories explored with provocative motivations for further personal investigation on the reader's part. Well, the enthousiasm Burleson leaves one with is more than enough for that.If you like Lovecraft and literature, your library shouldn't be without this.

A fascinating analysis of some of Lovecraft's central works through the tool of literary deconstruction. I enjoyed this book and found it an easy enough read, despite any formal study in literary criticism. (The author provides a helpful introduction to deconstruction.) Like the heading says, get it if you're a hardcore Lovecraftian, or if the idea of seeing the themes of a story analysed appeals to you; or preferably both.

As a long time Civil War student, I was greatly disappointed in this book. It is replete with historical inaccuracies, i.e. "All men are created equal" is in the Declaration of Independence and not the Constitution as stated in the book. Lee said "It is well that war is so terrible, lest we should grow too fond of it," at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862 and not at the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864 as inferred in the book. It is also poorly edited. A photograph of a Union General is described as being one of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. I stopped reading early on. I'd like my money back please.

Disappointed in this book. Not what I have seen in the past book, At times written at a very elementary level and some inaccuracies in the history itself. Still worth the read but for those not familiar with our history they will be misinformed at times.

I've enjoyed all the others but not this one. Maybe because I'm a civil war nut and comparing this one with any of the kazoodles - it doesn't measure up.

Perhaps, after having read so many of Bill O'Reilly's books, I have come to expect certain similarities. While,as always, this book is obviously well researched, it was extremely difficult to read. There are so many inserts of maps, photographs, and assorted explanations placed inappropriately in the middle of paragraphs and even sentences that Rob give attention to them is to lose continuity. I was disappointed.

This was highly entertaining and brought the names of American wild west history to life. These were real people with real feelings and reasons for acting the way they did.Would that our history teachers were devoted enough to teach their students with these insights!

Gives in depth coverage of battles and personal information about the men fighting in them. Didn't realize that Sherman attempted to capture Andersonville Prison and free the Union prisoners there.

I love Bill O’Reilly’s books and have read them all. The writing is detailed and spectacular as it draws you into the subject matter. Once I am done with each book, I can’t wait for the next one. This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn about the Civil War and feel like they were sitting on the sidelines observing the action. Awesome book!

We all think we know the history of the Civil War but you will be surprised at the behind the scenes details covered here. I tried to watch Fox TV series of this topic but find the show disjointed and difficult to follow. This sequential coverage of the war is very satisfying and deeply informative.

This is by far the best book I have read so far, from all of the Native American books on Amazon. It is also the best of quality of the books I have received, even though it's soft bound. You will take a historical adventure with Black Elk at your side to the Little Big Horn and to Wounded Knee. This book was written from the transcripts of the original author who lived with Black Elk while writing it. The book was translated by Black Elk's son who was fluent in English and in the Sioux language. There are footnotes throughout by a reviewing author that tells of when the author strays from the original transcripts. I think they could have been left out or put at the end of the book. I would read the entire chapter, then go back and read the footnotes, as there are so many that they kind of get in the way. At times though, I must admit they help out. This is a real life Native American history as told by one who lived it. His vision, is probably one of the most important lessons in all of Native American history and belief systems. I truly think this is one of the best books that I have read so far, and intend to read it again. It makes me sorry to read of our military efforts to exterminate our Native Americans and our government treaties that were broken. We are truly blessed by our Native American spirituality, history and wisdom. I can only pray that we work together on this earth and honor our words in the future.

Having read Black Elk Speaks decades ago, and loving it, I wanted to upgrade to this “premier edition” with photos, art work, appendices etc. I was horribly disappointed to realize as I was reading along, that 33 pages are missing in the center of the book! Once you reach page 98, the text reverts back to page 67 and repeats the next 31 pages. When you reach page 98...again....it skips to page 131! Pages 99 through page 130 are missing. I am so disappointed. If you are planning on ordering this edition, ask the seller to verify that their copy does not share this defect. I don’t know if it was just my copy, or if the entire printing run was affected. It should have been caught by the seller before listing it, in my opinion.

Well written. Keeps your attention. Fascinating and true story written by a man who was getting a first hand account of an historic event that he actually lived through. Priceless history from the American Indian position.

There are few words I can say, so stricken, my heart, from this book. The voice of Black Elk is clear. His telling of his vision has inspired me in so many aspects of my own life- that a vision must be stepped into even ritualistically at first to gain power from the vision itself. How many ways can that be applied to my own life?? Deep love for him.

Hear it directly from the author who lived it and wrote it, Black Elk. The United States has a very poor history in terms of its relationships with Indian tribes and its willingness to honor agreements. It was a period of great greed for land and a saga of eliminating Indian tribes. Black Foot relates how the white settlers invaded the Lakota's land and literally stole it right out from under them. The white man killed off the buffalo herds for mainly sport, and deprived the Lakota's from their primary life line in terms of food, skins, etc. He speaks of how the White Man killed off his culture making the Indians more and more dependent upon what the White Man was willing to give the Indians. He speaks of the Indian victory at Little Big Horn, better known as Custer's Last Stand, and then the unpardonable American slaughter of Lakota men, women and children at Wounded Knee.The United State's cruel and inhumane treatment of the American Indians is best told in this book. Read it and do all you can in your power to never allow a travesty of this description befall any other people on earth.

This is an authentic recollection, taken down in 1930 by a professor/anthropologist, of a Sioux medicine man and warrior's life, an Indian who was present at both the defeat of General Custer (1876) and the massacre of Sioux women and children at Wounded Knee in 1890. The speaker,Black Elk, tells with great poignancy his early visions as a youth that propelled him to be a healer; of the betrayal of his Sioux people by the whites when gold was discovered in the Black Hills of Dakota territory; of the "rubbing out of Long Hair" ( the defeat of Custer), of Black Elk's travels in Europe as a performer in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show; and finally of his return to the frontier to witness and fight against US soldiers at Wounded Knee. He also recounts the assassinations of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull by the Reservation police.This is a book that should be on the reading list of every US high school's American History class. It is a rare insight into the broken treaties and the final betrayal, incarceration and placing on reservations of the proud, independent Sioux nation. It is the end of the frontier and the end of a way of life. Sadly, it is also a curtain raiser to the same kind of atrocities, little known, that US forces committed against Filipinos in the first years of the 1900's; and it leads to My Lai in Vietnam, and Abu Gharib in Iraq. It is another reminder that war and colonization is hell, and that commanders cannot be counted on to restrain their men, and that the casualties of conquest are more often civilians than soldiers.The real sadness of this book, however, is Black Elk's measured but ultimately tragic telling of the death of the Sioux way of life in the final decades of the 1800's, of the breaking of their spirit, and the perishing of their magical, nomadic culture at the hands of "Western progress."
