This book is a must read for people of all ages. I am 33 years old & was touched by this true story. I gifted a copy to my sister who is a social worker & a child I mentor.

In December 2009, I had the privilege of accompanying Dr. Bonyo on his annual medical missions trip to lovely village of Masara, Kenya. One evening after dinner, Dr. Bonyo shared his story with the group. I was very pleased to hear that the next summer his story was going to be published as a children's book because I did not want to forget any of it. The illustrations in the book were beautfully done and the storytelling really makes you feel like you are part of the adventure. This book makes me smile even when I just look at it sitting on my shelf and will always serve as a great reminder of the time I spent in Kenya with such a warm and generous man, Dr. Bonyo Bonyo.

After meeting Dr. Bonyo, I was extremely interested in reading this book. I read a friend's copy and loved it so much, I wanted to share it with my grandchildren. I was inspired by the book and by the kindness and modesty of the man the boy in the book became.

Great book! I had the pleasure of having Dr. Bonyo as a preceptor and hearing this story from him. While reading it, I could hear his voice! Not only does this book teach children to chase their dreams, hopefully it will teach them to give back to society. I bought this book for my niece and nephew, but may be a little too young to fully appreciate it at ages 4 and 5.

I just absolutely love this book. It is also great as an electronic version. It a very inspiring that can be enjoyed over and over again!!

It's another good one to add to classrooms and school libraries to help children learn about the world.

I have been reading VDH political opinions for years and listen to him on talk radio whenever I can. I think he has an awesome intellect and his views on the current political issues match up with mine. So not surprisingly I thought this book was a well written, well argued and engaging text about the western way of waging war, what has made western armed forces generally more successful when engaging in military actions against other cultures. He highlights 10 decisive battles in which in most cases, although outnumbered, on foreign ground with extended supply lines, western expeditionary forces from Alexander the Great to the British in South Africa to Cortez in Mexico were able to successfully rout the enemy.The standard answer for why the western way of war is so lethal and in the most part triumphant against other cultures is "superior technology". VDH digs deeper than that offering up the western liberal ethos of political freedoms, capitalism, individuality etc as underlying factors in western military campaigns.

Hanson is at once one of our most learned historians of world conflict and also one of its sharpest writers on its many small conflicts. This equips him well to address their meaning and significance. Those who flinch at the very idea of American (or most to the point Western) exceptionalism, will find their views powerfully challenged in Mr. Hanson's pages. The most fragile among them may find his book akin to a "trigger," for the delicate sensibilities of cultural relativists, who tend to be innocent of the experience of actual armed conflict, aren't prepared either to tender or critically evaluate claims that a nation's record in war, its military history, can be any kind of proxy for that nation's cultural merit. But that's what Hanson attempts here. That attempt is audacious -- and also successful. By surveying battles from Salamis to Tet, with a stopover in the Zulu War and WWII's Battle of Midway, Hanson makes a convincing case that cultural norms such as consensual government, personal freedom, and independent intellectual inquiry, as they relate to a nation's ability to innovate, pay a dividend in history's vast colosseum of warfare. The results stand as a verdict on the merits of a culture. As technologized style of warfare becomes more deadly, the threat Hanson sees as most dangerous is not the primitive reprobates of ISIS blowing up cafes, but a wider war between powerful Western nations. Short of that, if our "rationalist tradition" can hold a peace (in the larger picture), we can hope that Western nations' talent for war will serve civilization rather than endanger it.On the whole an thoughtful, stimulating, eye-opening, conversation-starting book.

As always, Victor D. Hanson sets the record straight. This book covers several key military engagements throughout the history of western civilization. From ancient Greece to the Korean War. The basic purpose of this book is to attempt a rational explanation as to why western powers have always prevailed, even in defeat. Hansons' thesis is thoroughly proven. Could be read by a layman, but as always a basic understanding of history is helpful so as to not be overwhelmed by names & places. Still, one can get the point without the preface knowledge.

During the past six months, I have read two of VDH books and watched several of his appearances on Youtube. I have also read several of his shorter pieces on US politics, International Relations and Global Security. My background in the study of history and warfare is modest at best. However, many of his arguments and insights appear reasonable. They also cast an optimistic light on the future of the West, capitalism and republican democracies.The book "Carnage and Culture" is an excellent primer on conflicts. I highly recommend this book, in particular for it's analysis of "what the past can teach us". As I interpret it, for VDH the study of History is not only an end in itself, but can teach us much about the challenges we face today. There are similarities between conflicts in Greece and ancient Rome, and those faced today by the US in the Middle East. As an Argentine citizen, It was interesting to read (short) comments on the Falklands (Malvinas) 1982 conflict. VDH thesis on the superiority of the "West" (Great Britain) over Argentina appears validated on some (but not all) counts:(1) Superior fighting skills of a democracy over a "dictatorship" (military government)(2) The idea that "non-West" (¿¿Argentina??) combatants emphasize excellence in "single combat": this is probably validated by the substantial damage caused by Argentina Air Force and Naval pilots to GB fleet. This last point is not mentioned by VDH but I bring it to the attention of readers.(3) The miscalculation of the Military Junta on GB reaction possibly a consequence of the junta not understanding GB tradition in the "Western" way of war, as opposed to procrastination, negotiation, etc.The sinking of the ARA Belgrano in effect closed all negotiations, and resulted in a head to head battle.(4) Classical infantry approach to battle in Goose Green, Mount Longdon, Two Sister and Tumbledown, reminiscent of infantry battles of olden times. (5) Reading Argentine accounts of land battles, I find some support for VDH idea that free exchange of ideas in military forces of consensual governments contribute to success -- in some cases Argentine junior officers voice objections to strict "top down" command from higher-ups.However, I have some objections on VDH claim that Argentina had important advantages over GB, advantages that GB superior military skills were able to overcome:(1) The Malvinas are closer to Argentina than to GB, OK. But this not mean that Argentina had air superiority. On the contrary, Argentine planes flying from the continent had only minutes of autonomy over the islands. This was not the case for carrier-based Harrier jets.(2) GB received support from the US (last generation Sidewinder missiles, satelite intelligence). GB also receive substantiaal support from Chile (intelligence). Argentina had to hold in reserve in the Argentine-Chile border troops well adapted to cold weather.(3) From the sinking of the Belgrano onwards, the islands were effectively isolated: nuclear submarine made sea transport impossible. Supplies were carried with extreme difficulty, and in minuscule amounts by air. The Goose Greene garrison did not have 120 mm heavy mortars or field artillery. Several army contingents (such as the one in Gran Malvina) were in danger of running out of food (short rations resulted in "survival" mode, many of the troops losing significant weight).Summarizing, I am not sure whether "military excellence" per se was the defining factor in land battles, or a combination of excellence (professional soldiers of a First World NATO country vs conscript army of a less-developed economy), as well as considerably more abundant resources + help from US and Chile.Having said that, VDH book clearly illustrates the nature of war, and in the case of Malvinas is useful for understanding why what happened happened.

I thought the first of Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next novels, The Eyre Affair, was fantastic. Funny, literate, clever - a wonderful book, especially for voracious readers. I recommended it to others, bought it for them, and just generally enjoyed it. While the next three books in the series weren't quite as magical, they were also a lot of fun.By the time I reached the end of Something Rotten, though, I felt the joke had run its course. Not that there's not a lot more material to be used - there is - it just seemed that Fforde's particular approach to was losing its edge. Fforde may have felt the same, since the series paused for several years.I think both he and I were right. First Among Sequels, while showing all the same cleverness and literary in-jokes as the earlier books, feels forced. It's clever, but it's just not as funny as it should be.I felt somewhat the same about the first book of the Nursery Crime series - more clever than funny. I still think Fforde has a lot going for him; I expect to pick up the first books of some of his (many) other series. And I very strongly recommend the first Thursday Next quartet. This book, however, I think is best suited to true aficionados or to newcomers.

Never mind; it makes perfect sense within the pages, just as will the part played by the recipe for unscrambled scrambled eggs in the prevention of the End of Time as we know it.)I've always considered myself a linear-thinking, down-to-earth kind of guy. But the tremendous appeal of the Thursday Next series to my reader's appreciation has challenged that self-assessment. If you're a book-lover like me determined to read until the last gasp, do yourself the great favor of devouring FIRST AMONG SEQUELS, and indeed the entire series if you haven't yet done so. Lose yourself in a good book.

These books are pure entertainment. If there are any flaws (and I've caught a few) they are totally forgivable because these books are like chamomile for me. I've been reading the series before bed and it's the best! The chapters stand alone as entertaining but I don't feel compelled to stay up all night reading more. By the next day, I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next. Pro tip: check these out from your local library in book format, not eBook format (or buy the book if you prefer). The formatting is a key part of the experience and it gets really sloppy and confusing in the kindle edition.

I have loved the Thursday Next novels for years. They are the epitome of reading for those of us who are addicted to reading. These books make me think since the politics of the Book World are similar to our own.

A great book, Inca Ice Maiden introduces children to mummies. This particular book is most interesting because the mummy is that of a young teenage girl whose preserved body is found in the Andes. Nothing spectacular about that, except she's found sitting, eyes closed and appears to be sleeping.The book explores what might have happened to her. How did she get up the mountain by herself? What did she eat before her death? And was she a sacrificial victim to the gods?Terrific book even for grown ups, but I find one fault with it. This isn't a book for an eight year old, but more for a child age 10-12. I wish the writers would have done a simple man for younger children. I'm sure they'd enjoy it as well.

Where do I even start? This book makes me SO happy. It is quite literally the most beautiful and easy-to-use crystal book I've ever read (and I've read a ton, I'm a longtime crystal collector and general metaphysical junkie!).First of all, the design is totally gorgeous and modern, unlike almost every other crystal book I've seen.I am so in love with the way that the individual crystal pages are laid out. Super cute and clear. Each crystal page lists:- the main "traits" of each crystal (for instance, under Agate: Protection + Courage + Strength + Grounding)- color variations- largest modern sources- Chakras each crystal resonates to (love this!)- Special care recommendations (for instance, whether sunlight fades the crystal)- whether water exposure is safe for the crystal -- THIS IS EXTREMELY HELPFUL INFORMATION WHICH IS NOT EASILY FOUND!!- several paragraphs focusing on the crystal's metaphysical qualities- and finally, a "Notes" section with practical information such as what form the crystal is found in, historical info, alternate names, etc.Additionally, each of the 50 featured crystals gets its own gorgeous, full-page photograph. This alone sets the book apart -- I've never seen a crystal book use this format of having full-page, high-fashion-esque photography. The aesthetic is very Kinfolk, Goop, Darling magazine... okay okay, maybe (definitely!) there's more of the color pink used than Kinfolk magazine would have, but it's still on the same wavelength (and who doesn't love pink?).If you're not familiar with her, the author is @goldirocks.co on instagram, which is where I first learned of her. I'm a huge fan (obviously)! I love the way she shares inspirational info about crystals and crystal healing.The front part of the book is a great basic intro to crystals and crystal healing, including a fantastic section with specific recommendations of crystals for each room of the house, crystals for various activities (like work, travelling etc), and crystal gifts appropriate for different occasions. Again, have never seen this info anywhere else and I LOVE IT! Also really love the section on crystal chakra healing...So yeah, I'm totally in love with this book, if you haven't figured that out by now. Oh, and the price is amazing for a book of this quality, it's hardback with thick matte pages and gold foil on the cover. What's not to love?!

The book was a lot smaller in size than I thought it was, but that's perfectly okay! It doesn't take up too much space. The information it gives you is pretty amazing if I do say so myself! It gives you insight on minerals, rocks, and crystals. It tells you how to use them, what they're good for, how to cleanse them and it has really good photos along with it! My favorite crystal book so far and it's super easy for beginners!

This book is an easy to follow, comprehensive introduction to crystals and (nearly) everything they entail. From different uses for crystals to how to cleanse them, Van Doren covers it. I love the crystals she included in the book, along with their descriptions, as it provided a helpful jumping off point for learning about the crystals I've accumulated over time and which ones I should add to my collection. I also love that she included a fairly descriptive meditation/chakra cleansing guide. This is my first book I've purchased about crystals and it was so, so helpful!

I had been waiting for the US release of this book, and eagerly bought it when I saw it was available on Amazon some months ago. "Crystals: The Modern Guide to Crystal Healing" is informative and full of beautiful photos. If you are just starting to learn about crystals and their possible healing properties, this book is a great resource! The book contains easy-to-find crystals (you should be able to find most of these at your local, metaphysical shops), their description, and enumerates their possible influences on your energies. My favorite thing about this book is how the information is conveyed- it's easy to read and understand and gives you JUST the right amount of information. This is not a complete "crystal encyclopedia", but rather the author's breakdown of crystals they would recommend to a beginner. Quality book!

I have read many books on crystals and healing but this one tops it for me. So informative, but to the point and includes many small details that other books don’t, such as what stones can go in water and which can’t. Fantastic info on meditation and cleansing. All around, can’t say enough good things about it. I keep it on my coffee table as well for guests.

Just started reading and so far am very happy with the format of the book and information covered. I can see this being a go to gift for a few friends in future.

Unfortunately my package came super damaged which is no fault to the seller. But the binding on my book is very dented which is making the book not close properly. But I'm still giving the book a 5 stars because it's not the sellers fault that the package was damaged. Other than that the book is AMAZING. So helpful knowing which ones can be water cleansed and the different benefits to each type of cleansing technique.
