As the Chinese translator for this book, i do not like it very much. There are a few scientific mistakes in it. For example, the author confused "moss" and "lichen" in one chapter, and in the other chapter the explanation about why ice floats on water is wrong. i have persuaded my cousins not to buy my translated version for their kids although i really did try to rectify these mistakes or even provide a re-written version for some parts while translating.Good part about this book is that it is a fairly nice instruction to explore the nature around in different seasons and encouraged the children to gather samples, isolate specimens, look up species in field guides, and make good notes.

Nature in a Nutshell is a handy book for parents who want to inject some educational experiences in their child's daily learning routine. The book contains one- hundred and twelve total activities relating to nature and education and most of them can be performed quickly and easily, using items available inside or immediately outside of most homes.The activities offered in the book are mostly simple and there are few materials necessary. Some activities are more complex, but most are basic and can be completed in a matter of minutes. The activities are divided up based on season and while this is a good way to organize, I think it would be better to organize based on difficulty level: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. This way, parents could slowly build up, from the easy to the more challenging, and increase their child's learning and confidence in the process.The book is recommended for children between the ages of eight and twelve, but I don't see why parents would want to wait this long to introduce their children to these learning activities. Younger children, in the four to eight age group, will enjoy the activities also. I admit that the explanations offered for the outcomes of these activities are likely going to be too complicated for children in these younger age categories, but children will still enjoy them and even if they retain only a small amout of information, they will have a head start over other children their age when they eventually enter school.I like that this book includes a reference section in the back, but one fact that puzzled me at first is that the list of important nature- oriented organizations doesn't include any web site addresses. All you get is the name of the organization, the address of the organization's headquarters, and its phone number. A little research confirms the reason: The book was published in 1995. That explains the lack of web sites, but the publisher still deserves a small amount of criticism for not offering an updated version of the book in such a long period of time.Nature offers much to learn about and Nature in a Nutshell for Kids is a very good guide for young children who are eager to learn more about the world around them and parents who want to encourage education. The activities in this book are generally quick and simple and they all offer an important lesson about the natural world. Don't wait until your child reaches elementary school age- introduce your young boy or girl to the activities in this guide at the preschool level, and provide them a jump- start toward a life of education that will improve knowledge and instill the love of learning at a young age.

Lots of great projects for kids to try. I love that the projects are broken out by season. We will start with winter projects and work our way through the seasons. My 7 year old daughter got this as a Christmas gift and is very excited to try everything today. We homeschool and will use the book for fun projects

I have purchased and used three different beginning level Spanish audio programs: Simon and Schuster's "Pimsleur Conversational Latin American Spanish", Macmillan Audio's "Behind the Wheel Spanish Level 1", and Language Audiobook's "Power Spanish Accelerated". All three accomplish their purpose of teaching conversational Spanish at a basic level of fluency. But important differences do exist.Vocabulary Building: I'd say that the Power Spanish Accelerated program gives you a lot more vocabulary bang for your language learning buck, enough there to get you through just about any basic conversational situation. The program uses a lot of sentence building exercises. You can pretty quickly learn to build your own sentences. Power Spanish teaches you to be conversationally flexible.Structure: The Pimsleur lessons are highly structured with no real variation from the same conversational format, to the point of being rigid. The conversations are then dissected and the listener is guided through everything that was said. There is nothing wrong with that, but personally I prefer to have the target words and phrases presented to me at the start of each lesson, minus the conversation. I'd rather learn one word or phrase at a time, not one conversation at a time. I especially don't like hearing the conversations ahead of time and having to guess at the meanings before they are translated for me.Power Spanish Accelerated, like Pimsleur, makes use of an interval memory or repetition technique. The narrator regularly returns to already-learned words and phrase. About halfway though the Power Spanish Accelerated discs it occurred to me that the Power Spanish method somehow gets you to memorize without your being fully aware that you are doing so. There is nothing mysterious about it. It is simply a matter of constantly presenting new material while at the same time reviewing previous material. You are moving forward even during those times that you are looking back. Sometimes you look backwards but you never move backwards. Power Spanish keeps you charging ahead.I feel like I have to listen to an entire thirty minute session to accomplish what Pimsleur has predetermined that I should accomplish. I think that Power Spanish Accelerated better allows you to determine the length of your lessons.Mood/Tone: The tone of the Power Spanish program is very positive and upbeat. It keeps my attention. Behind the Wheel is steady, but for me the low-keyed monotony of the program makes it tedious.Variety: The Pimsleur lessons are very structured, all following the same format. Power Spanish Accelerated is sprinkled with what the narrator calls `Audio Snapshots,' where you just listen without repeating as new words are introduced. They sort of focus you on what is to come before getting you engaged. The pace is a little quicker that the usual `listen and repeat' sections. They're also a nice break from the standard `listen and repeat' approach which is inherent to all language audio programs. I especially like the Power Spanish Accelerated sections where the learner has to try to say the word or sentence before and then again after the native speaker.The same native speakers (two, I think) accompany you throughout your Pimsleur audio experience. The Spanish on Behind the Wheel is spoken by the same male native speaker from start to finish, as far as I can tell. Only occasionally is the voice of a Spanish speaking female inserted. In contrast, Power Spanish Accelerated uses at least a half a dozen native speakers throughout its presentation, both male and female and from different Spanish-speaking countries. The back-and-forth use of several male and female native speakers makes the program more interesting, keeps my attention, and makes the learning happen faster.My Conclusion: If there is a secret to learning a foreign language that secret has to be staying with it. No language audio program will be effective if you don't use it. Pimsleur and Behind the Wheel are both okay. But if you're serious about using an audio program to learn to speak conversational Spanish, my thumbs go up the highest for Power Spanish Accelerated. I think that its variety of words and phrases and its upbeat tone make Power Spanish Accelerated the easiest of the three programs to stay with.

I had to stop my search for the next lessons to write this review. It seems some people did not listen to the part in the beginning that explains the Pimsler method. It is supposed to teach the way a child learns his own native language. You pick up the understanding of the grammar by listening to proper speech--without grammar lessons. One day it will just pop for you. Yes, it would be nice to have a broader vocabulary but, hey, it's level 1. You can get a phrasebook for your phone like Bravolol and swap out some words in your lessons. Just not while driving, right?

I was under the impression that this Level 1 Course was the whole course, it's NOT ! Actually it's only half the course and you cannot buy the second half of the course ! So if you like this course (which I did very much) and want to continue with your Level 1 studies you have to buy the complete 16 CDs and 32 lessons set which is a waste of money since you have already taken the first half of the course. It has 8 CDs although the title is mis-leading (leads you to believe 16CDs). Bottom line: Buy the 1-32 lesson course instead and save yourself a good chunk of money.

This is not a bad set but my god does it get tedious. I got through 10 discs in the car during my morning commute and had to stop from boredom. I know that repetition is the only way to learn a language, but I didn't find the scenarios presented super helpful, as it is not quite designed for traveling but also not quite designed for everyday conversation either. I also would have preferred to learn verb conjugations so that I know WHY we are saying something with different endings or learn how to change person/tense on my own, but this was never taught. Instead, you only learned what they told you to repeat, but I might be traveling with my partner and need to know how to say "we" instead of "I" all the time, so I found it somewhat limited. I also had a very basic background in Spanish from middle school (I'm now 35) that I barely remember but this still got dull fast. And I still don't know how to say a ton of things that I feel are quite basic for somebody traveling.

For my money, you cant beat learning a new language with this program! Though I sit in class and study our text book.... It is by listening to Pimsleur that i have gained the confidence to speak when I travel. I listen in my car... And thoroughly enjoy the conversational practice. Learning another language finally seems possible!!

I'm a near native speaker, and I bought this for my boyfriend some weeks ago. He's never even taken a Spanish class so all the material is brand new to him. He's about 1/4 of the way through the material, and with some help from me and the internet he's collected a nice range of phrases to use. He can kind of almost carry a conversation with my Mom, now. Everything he's learned so far is all very formal (using the "usted" tense most of the time instead of "tu") and they give you several dialects with little to no explanation. This last thing has been a point of some frustration for him since his only real exposure to Spanish has been me, and I have a Honduran/European Spanish accent (Grandmother's Honduran, studied in Spain). The difference between the pronunciations of "ll" are vast between some regions, and if you're not somewhat familiar with those sorts of things already, you might interpret the two pronunciations as two separate words. However, it is effective, especially in combination with other learning tools. I've used the German Pimsleur set, and I can say firsthand that Pimsleur makes great language tools.My boyfriend says about the course "I really enjoy it. It got to me and it's very enjoyable. Thank you SO much for getting for me!" He did have some trouble with the CD player and had to rip it to an MP3 player. That may not be the CD's fault, though.

Highly recommend this course. I'm a very slow learner but I am mastering this course due to its structure.
