My son loves this story! We are huge Thomas fans in our house and we had the Thomas ABC book, so I was very happy to see this 123 book. My son was thrilled to match up the set and see all his train friends in another great quality Thomas storybook. I recommend this book for everyone and really any age that wont rip the pages. My son is 8 and still likes to read counting books.

It goes up to 20, and my son loves it. He actually seemed addicted to it for a while, so that we all know it front to back now. Once you've read it a few times, you can start to switch things up, and I was surprised how ready he was for that. For example, Edward has 3 cars, and Gordon has 4...the book asks, which is greater? But I try to ask a different question every time: Which is fewer? which has less? Which is on the left? which is faster? He's also been able to recognize most of the teens, which was challenging at first. It's been a great book for us.

It's pretty good. Love how it counts all the way to 20, since my 2.5 year old has already mastered counting to 10. I wish the pictures of the items to be counted were much bigger though. The picture of the train is big and takes up 2/3 of the page, but then you are trying to count these teeny tiny seagulls in the corner. But I like it much better than another counting book we have that is too huge with flaps you have to lift up and very cumbersome. This book is a more comfortable size for me to hold while my son is on my lap.

My toddler is a big Thomas & Friends fan. With this book, I am able to keep his attention and he seems to be interested in learning numbers with Thomas. He now knows to count from 1 to 20 thanks to this wonderful book!We also purchased Thomas ABC book, which also helps him learn his alphabet!

Very cute book! My 2 year old loves Thomas and this book features a different train and number on every page, he loves going through it and finding all his "train friends". Pages are thin (regular paper) so wouldn't be good for a child who can't turn pages without ripping them, but all in all it's a great book and we really enjoy reading it.

My toddler is a Thomas fan, so he asks for this book to read and starts counting the items. The size is great for his little hands and the only CON that I see is that the pages can get very deteriorated with a young kid learning to pass them quickly. Otherwise, we have lots of fun counting with this book. He's 2 years old and counts over 10 already, so this book has helped.

I bought this for my grandsons and my daughter in law said they love them. Thomas the Train is my 3 yr. old grandson's favorite. He is very bright, so the 123 book will reinforce what she is already teaching them.

My grandson loves Thomas the Train. He knows them all by heart and at 3 can count to 20 so this is really good for him. He loves it.I received the book just like new and am very happy to get it. I also got the Thomas ABC Book as well.

Keladry of Mindelan has earned her knight's shield just as open warfare with the northern nation of Scanran begins. But instead of the front line, Keladry is sent to a refugee camp, where she is placed in command in spite of her youth and inexperience. The war finds her soon enough, and events soon force her into a deadly confrontation with the wizard who has been equipping the Scanrans with monstrous killing machines. This was a really satisfying conclusion. As much fun as it was to see Kel get to do some serious fighting, the whole series has really been about Kel learning leadership, and it's in the leadership role where she truly shines here. Kel needs to be an inspiration, a diplomat, and an effective manager, and she calls on those skills as much as what she's learned of fighting. And as the war rages around her, Kel has to face the heartbreak of a leader who watches good people die under her command. The author does not pull punches on the grim realities, but still manages to make this an uplifting finale to an excellent story.

Ive given the entire series 5 stars. Considering I just put the book down not 2 minutes ago, I'm wondering if its wise to write a review without giving my mind a chance to relax from its reeling. I didn't think I could love a series more than Tamora Pierce's Immortals quartet. I loved Diane and Numair, I loved her strength and his wisdom. However Kelandry gives them a run for their money.Kel becomes a night, obviously so, but what grips me is that I watched her grow. I felt like I was there with her as a child, fending off attack after attack from her peers and superiors. I watched her battle fears and grow into a stalwart woman without even noticing.I didn't agree with Kel's idea that tattling was bad practice, and whatever price she paid for it, the rewards reaped ten fold at the end. The people who doubted her (The ones who mattered) no longer did. She broke the surface, tradition and sometimes my heart. Though there inst a love interest in these books (something that makes me cringe because I do like a side of romance) it doesn't matter. Tamora paints war as what it is, ugly, and her priorities were clear.I don't think Kel will die a virgin however. I'm hoping she is mentioned in the Trickster's duet. Though Im praying that Tamora Pierce will write more about Tortall and its present day. I grew up with Immortals, and no other author gives me such a fluttery feeling in my chest. One of my favorite things about this book was the addition of Diane, Numair, and Alanna. I am not ashamed to say I fan girl squealed any time they were in a scene. It was like a warm reminder that they were okay, they lived on, and they were happy. I have a feeling I will be reading these books all over again soon.

I ordered LADY KNIGHT because my old copy was wearing out...I love this book, always have--and prefer the artwork on this cover to art the newest editions of this book by Tamora Pierce have--it shows a strong and determined Kel, and her crochety, loyal gelding, Peachblossom.Kel's quest for the Nothing Man, her loyalty to her friends, old and new, her affection for her animal friends(magically enhanced by Daine the Wildmage to help Kel defend her refugee camp), remain, as always, a joy to read.A book for children and adults alike--and as it was written during 9-11, a fitting tribute to those lost on that terrible day in New York City.

I really like this series. Kel becomes a green knight. Find out what happens to her and what new adventures await her. Make sure you read the other three books before this. Find out what happens with your other favorite characters as well like Nel. I will give you a little spoiler. Kel gets a new servant. I laughed out loud about how she got him. And a few things what happened afterward. There was even a scene when I wanted to cry a little. So check it out. It is a little longer than the other books and that is actually a good thing. I will probably end up rereading it in the future. So this will be a great classic for me. If you have liked this series I would recommend checking out Trickster's Choice and The Trickster Queen. There is also the the Beka Cooper books. This series is set before Alanna and all of them. So keep that in mind. These books are set in the same world as Tortall though.

Tamora Pierce is definitely my favorite author and the Protector of the Small is my favorite quartet. Alanna even mentions it in the book - the reason that Kel draws such admiration from her fans (and readers) is that she seems more real to people than the Legendary Champion. She's very down to earth and no nonsense, and struggles with being the first girl to openly strive for knighthood. She deals with everyday discrimination, excels despite setbacks, and stays true to her values. Kel is a strong role model for girls and her story is also a great story to read.

A satisfying conclusion to this series: Kel is a believable hero, who continues to develop through the challenges of surviving a border war and the terrifying magic and monsters of an enemy mage. As the fourth (and last) book of this series, this novel brings together some of the core characters who have been woven into previous novels. (And leaves this reader hope that there will be more novels about Kel's life after the war!)This is a marvelous series for young adults--and for adults who enjoy and value young adult literature. I have watched students, nephews, and nieces become captivated by this quartet. I am happy to see the values of caring, persistence and gender equity that develops through the series.

I love the action in this book. It was week thought out. Made you feel for each character, even the minor ones and ones you did not like. The ending left you wanting more, but the story was over. Lady Kel is one of my most favorite characters ever. She is smart, strong, caring, but she also has flaws that make her believable. I love how complex she is and it translates well.

The sacred canopy is the universal world view that any religion proposes, thanks to human consciousness. This interpretation is mostly of the historic religions of the West and the secularization of these since the Enlightenment. All canopies alienate people from others, so all religions embark on separate marketing campaigns, like New Orthodoxy or Liberal Catholicism. The 'sociological theory of religion' is as follows.Consciousness externalizes or seeks to make inner experiences concrete in the outer experiences of the surrounding world. Religion constructs a sacred canopy, or all-embracing world order (Chapter 1).Producing sacred order is 'part of the same activity that produces society,' a result of consciousness that externalizes ideas (Chapter 2).The 'sacred canopy' is an all-embracing order that maintains society against chaos (Chapter 3).But there is chaos; and the suffering of the innocent, threatens the maintenance of institutional order, and poses the 'problem of theodicy.' People must accept or reject one or more aspects of social order. Religious experience is fundamentally alienating because it 'projects human meanings into the empty vastness of the universe '– a projection...which comes back as an alien reality to haunt its producers' (100). This is 'religion and alienation' (Chapter 4).Experiences remove sectors of society from the domination of religious definitions and symbols. This is the 'process of secularization' (Chapter 5).No competent authority imposes religious traditions any longer, so religions have to market their traditions. This poses them the 'problem of plausibility' (Chapter 6: 138).Since the surrounding social milieu no longer takes any orthodoxy's definitions of reality for granted, each religion organizes as a minority against a hostile, at least non-believing, milieu The poses the 'problem of legitimation' (Chapter 7).Alienation, or commitment to one view devalues other views, is endemic to religion. Any experience that casts doubt on the alienating view, however, threatens anomy, or 'bad faith' in the rightness of the particular view. For instance, the Jewish Covenant chose a minority and so alienated the 'Chosen People' from humanity in general. And Christian 'other-worldliness' completely disenfranchised the world, alienating people from this world. Again, the classic Moslem view alienates Islam from both, Judaism and Christianity, because they fell from true monotheism by adopting hullul, the doctrine of incarnation, as if anyone or anything could stand beside God or act as the mediator between God and humanity (121).Superb scholarship, complete indexing, readable academic prose, if somewhat dense in page-long paragraphs.

If professor Berger was trying to impress me with his vocabulary he certainly succeeded. Unfortunately my need to look up the meaning of so many words and untranslated Latin phrases made it difficult to concentrate on the content of his sentences, some of which I had to read 3 times to comprehend. However, once comprehended, the book is brilliant and I will certainly reread it frequently.

I bought this book for a graduate seminar on the sociology of religion, and it's an excellent jumping off point. Berger does an excellent job of taking you from the very beginning (his epistemology) to "empirical" evidence supporting his theory. I use quotation marks because it's a topic for debate (whether or not the argument is truly empirical let alone a solid support system for his claims).Berger writes in a much more approachable way than, let's say, Max Weber but isn't as abrasive as Karl Marx. But, his writing is provocative. I'm unsure how a religiously devout person would swallow some of his imagery, but it makes for a good read.

Essential Reading for understanding the "Sociology of Knowledge" as it applies to religious experience. Yes, it is a bit "dated" as any 50 year old book would be; however, his analysis and theory is spot-on-correct. I am indebted to Peter Berger for his clear, insightful perspective.

This book is essential to any student of religion or theology. Berger explores the complex relationship of internalization of beliefs and how these are externalized into our daily lives. This is an absolute necessity, even if you happen to disagree with Berger. This is one of the top sociological works of the 20th century.

This book is a must for anyone interested in the study or experience of religion in the modern world. Part one highlights the human need for meaning and order that is rooted in something less transient than human existence, and the way religion functions as a "shield" against various existential terrors. Although somewhat dated, the analysis of modern religion presented in part two is valuable for its discussions of how secularization has roots within religion itself, and how the relationships between religious denominations and the rest of society can be profitably described in terms borrowed from market economics. The book is highly readable, frequently funny, and provides a lucid introduction to a particular sociology of knowledge as well as a useful perspective on religion.

Very dry and academic. Used for sociology class but continue to use it for other classes.

Berger's book, whether you agree with his likely personal beliefs or not, takes a person through religion and how religion functions within society to the secularization and pluralism of America. Well-written and a must-read to understand culture and religion.

It never fails. Just when I don't think I can read a better book by Paul Monette, another one is discovered. Halfway Home is about Tom, a performance artist stricken with AIDS and his relationship with his two families: the one he was born to and the other he chose. Tom is pretty accepting of his impending death until two things happen: he falls in love and the sudden and unexpected arrival of his embattled brother, Brian. Tom must come to terms with the conflicted feelings he has toward Brian, who was not much more than a childhood bully to Tom. Brian is in trouble now and he turns to Tom for help. There was no one writer who could convey the ups and downs better of an AIDS patient than Paul Monette, who had AIDS for over a decade and eventually died from its complications. His style of writing is impeccable, putting the reader right in the middle of the fray.To say I recommend this book is an understatement. Please, if you had any doubt about giving Halfway Home a try, doubt no more. This book will take you and smash you up against a rock. It is that good!

Bittersweet yet wickedly funny to the end. A wonderfully written novel about AIDS, friendship, brotherhood, forgiveness and love. The setting is romantic and the characters well drawn. I highly recommend this book as well as Monette's two autobiographical works: Becoming A Man and Borrowed Time.

And a great story .... Loved it...felt lost when it ended ...and looking for another novel by the same author

Halfway Home by Paul MonetteIt's 1991 and Thomas Francis Shaheen (Tom) is living with Kaposi Sarcoma, a lethal complication (at the time) from HIV/AIDS. He has retired to die at the beach house owned by Graham Cole Baldwin (Gray) of the Baldwin family who owned most of California from Malibu to Santa Monica. There Tom meets Mona McMahon (Mona) and alongside Gray, they become a family.Growing up as a child, Tom was abused by his father and brother. "I'm an only child." was Tom's mantra. One day, out of the blue, Tom's abusive brother, Brian, walks into his life. Amazingly, Brian is now more accepting of Tom's lifestyle and demonstrates affection for his younger brother. After Brian leaves, there are news hat Brian and his family have been killed. It turns out that Brian was involved in a corruption case with his construction company's partner, Jerry Curran (Jerry). Brian turns on Jerry and Jerry burns out Brian's house. But Brian and his family had escaped alive.Brian reappears back in Tom's house with his wife, Susan, and son, Daniel. Escaping from Jerry, they are being protected by the FBI. Brian is testifying against Jerry, in exchange for a plea deal with minimal jail time. For the first time in his life, Brian needs Tom's help. And help is what Brian gets. Brian has become a beaten man. In his bitter wife, Susan, and sensitive son, Daniel, Tom can see the pain of his own past. Brian must help his brother, while he deals with a new love relationship with Gray. To do so, he enlists Kathleen Towney, an ex-nun who runs the women's shelter and the gay and lesbian friends who have nurtured him.Tom has to mend his own fences and heal wounds that had never closed. The book ends with Tom finding a way back to the theater to perform his signature piece, Miss Jesus, as a metaphor of opening himself to the love that may heal him....The book is narrated from the first person point of view. It takes you back to the days of the plague and it's a beautiful story of love and redemption. It is a story that tries to find meaning to the madness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It reads in a day or two. However, for those of us who lived the epidemic, it can open old wounds...

There's nothing interesting about this book at all. I was bored from the beginning thinking it'll pick up in the middle. I found myself reading through the book just to finish it because I don't like to leave books unread. If you get offended easily where religion is concerned then Miss. Jesus as played by the title character in the book as a flamboyant Jesus Christ might offend you. The drama is to dry. Though it ends on a happy note for the character, I was just happy to finish the book.

Stepmonster begins with an interesting premise, culturally and historically step mothers are discriminated against, for which Wednesday Martin provides evidence. She identifies the age-old dynamic whereby the children are antagonistic towards the step mother and the father remains passive, unable to defuse this cycle. Evidence is provided by Wednesday, that statistically second marriages with step children, have an extremely high failure rate, as high as 70%. Whereby the remaining percentage of marriages with step children which survive statistically beyond a number of years remain together. Thus, Wednesday encourages prioritising the marriage to the children by the father. Logically this makes sense. After all what’s the point of re-marrying if not to make it work. She recommends stepmothers, based on studies, disengage from stepchildren to make them feel less conflicted and give undermining mothers less ammunition to use against them. She reiterates that stepfamilies should not and cannot emulate a ‘real’ biological nuclear family with mother, father and children.I do not doubt that this might help, as what is not discussed but this is clearly set to do, is to make the biological mother feel secure in her role as mother when the children are away from her and for the stepchildren not to have to show or demonstrate any familial emotions or feelings toward a stepmother. A stepmother should accept that the mother will be involved in her home. What makes me extremely uncomfortable in this is that the undertone of the book is that a stepmother should be submissive to the stepchildren and the mother in her own home. If she has a thought or feeling toward the child in regard to care or caring, she should stifle this as she is over-reaching in her role and will antagonise the mother. Thus, the main person in the dynamic whose behaviour needs modification is the stepmother which seems to bring Wednesday full circle. Whilst at the beginning of the book she is sympathetic and indeed, at times, believes the stepmother is much maligned, by the end of the book, it is at the end of the day, the stepmother whose behaviour needs to be modified.Clearly through Wednesday Martin’s books she believes she is a feminist and progressive, I can’t help but feel that Stepmonster reinforces societal acceptance that treating stepmothers as the villain in the piece is okay, that the mother’s rights supersede the stepmother’s, and the old-fashioned biological nuclear family is the optimal situation.Whilst stepmothers are not ‘supposed’ to have feelings or be active participants in the care of the children, legally they will be expected to fund and provide the child’s care day-to-day whilst in her home. If a stepmother were not to provide material or emotional support for a stepchild she would and is considered very harshly by society. Should the stepmother unfortunately pass away, she will also be socially expected, and legally required in many places, to leave money to the children. This dichotomy is not addressed in Wednesday’s book. It is touched upon at times but not addressed. The anthropological studies provided by Wednesday are set to reinforce the idea that genetically the nuclear biological family is more able to bond. Genetically humans are 99.5% the same so this premise is based on the 0.5% difference. Can 0.5% of genetic difference account for bonding or is this social and cultural effects within the study populations?Re-married fathers are described as passive and ineffectual in the dynamic of the antagonistic children in the book. What is not described in the dynamic of the passive father and the antagonistic children toward their stepmother, is that quite often there are court orders or mediation agreements beholding the father on care arrangements, which constrains his behaviour and puts the father in a very difficult position. This creates a situation of power for the children, especially as they become teenagers and are psychologically aware of the power they hold in the dynamic of the stepmother's household. Wednesday does identify this as a motivating factor but attributes it to the stepmother being a rival for the father’s time. What is less acknowledged is that the children may also be driven to misbehave and mistreat the stepmother to please the mother. Logically the children have more at stake in the household where they spend most of their time. If the mother has majority custody of the children and the children are aware of the mother’s unhappiness or anger at the stepmother, then the children are more likely to lash out at the stepmother. Wednesday acknowledges this as the mother not ‘giving her blessing’. This seems to be watering down the role of the mother in the antagonistic dynamic. The recommendation from Wednesday for stepmothers to disengage would, logically, help to somewhat defuse this situation and may make the stepmother’s life easier if she can tune out the negative behaviour, however it won’t remove or change the underlying dynamic.Overall, the book is an interesting read, but I did find myself concluding at the end of the book that it simply reinforced the idea of stepmothers being monsters whose own behaviour was responsible for their mistreatment by their stepchildren. That if only stepmothers could find the right balance, not over-reaching or too caring, and detachment, because it is not their right to be maternalistic or nurturing toward the child, they would have a better life.

This book is wonderful if you are in the midst of "stepmothering" and feel completely overwhelmed and defeated. Just knowing that there are other people out there, going through the same things is incredibly uplifting. The fact is, when you become a stepmother you have no idea how hard it will be. Everyone (including you) has different expectations of what your role as stepmother is supposed to look like. You will go through a season when you will feel HORRIBLE about yourself all the time. If that is where you are at, this book is for you. You won't find much empathy out there from your friends and family because "you knew what you were getting into" or your new family because "the kids come first". I can now confidently say that both of those perspectives is dead wrong. Does anyone really know what they are getting into when they get married? Try adding (often traumatized) children to the newlywed mix and see how easy it is. The best thing you can do for your children/stepchildren is to have a strong marriage. Their lives have been shattered enough already without enduring another divorce. I love this book because it helped me get on the path to healing. A huge part of this is going through a grief process and letting go of what you thought your marriage and family life would be like.I know some people think this book is too negative in it's portrayal of the role of stepmother but I think it is very realistic. My husband started it then stopped reading because it was "too depressing". LOL, that's the life a a step mom!

My husband thinks its ridiculous that I'm relying on a book so much - he doesn't get how wonderful it was to realize, upon reading this book, that what we're dealing with is normal; that my feelings are normal. Having those things validated made such a difference in my mindset. I'd spent so much time trying to be liked by my 19-year old stepdaughter and this book gave me the permission to let go of that. It's freeing, actually, to realize I don't need her to like me or love me - just treat me with respect. And in the same manner, I don't need to go overboard trying to achieve that love. This book gave me "permission" to be myself and to disengage. I had thought I was alone in my my feelings of isolation, failure, stress .... the fights with her over-indulgent father! But it's all normal. So we move forward and I have a new attitude, which makes all the difference, and is a direct effect of reading Stepmonster.UPDATE, July 2016:I actually end up re-reading parts of this book (specifically the section on disengaging and the chapter on adult stepchildren) on a regular basis. This book is a support system for me and I'm continuously grateful for it. Everytime I feel like I AM somehow an awful person and an evil stepmother, this book reminds me that I'm human and this type of situation is NORMAL. Thank you Wednesday Martin!

As a step mother without her own children this book was a life saver for me. I would continually try to bond with my 11 year old step daughter only to later find out she was telling vicious lies about me to her mother. Her mother would not ask my husband about it and instead she took him to court for full custody! Luckily the court was able to get the truth out of my step daughter and she finally admitted that she lied about me.I thought I was the only one out there having these issues and the nasty thoughts and resentment that I felt about being stabbed in the back by my stepdaughter. This book explained that no matter how hard I try there are cases where the kid is not going to like you because they feel loyal to their mother. So, I stopped trying and I am so much happier! I asked my husband to read this book and he said it was very eye opening. He was finally able to see that it wasn't my fault. He was always on my side but until he read the book I could tell that he thought I was doing something wrong.

Very fascinating!

well written and a good read

If this title interests you, you will be happy with this book.

This was supposed to be a coloring book about bowling alleys. It only had 15 pages about bowling alleys. The other 70 pages were about the military, war destruction, a few nice pictures of parks, I think from France, a picture with president Obama and some other guys, a map of Ceylon. But VERY FEW Bowling Pictures. The printer really messed this book up. And the print quality was horrible.
