I seriously love these travel books. I own about 10 to different cities. Any time we take a trip, we buy one. I'll keep it simple...1. There are tons of pictures.2. There is a nice map.3. It fits in my back pocket (sticks out a little).4. It's glossy so it can get a little wet and be ok.5. It breaks things down in such a way that you can easily see the highlights in any city.6. I'll mention tons of pictures again because if you compare this to a Fodor's side by side you will see why you want this one.

I'm an avid traveler and I'm picky about my travel books. Considering I only spent 3 days in Toronto, this book did just fine for me. It had enough information to get me to some really interesting sites and neighborhoods. It even gave detailed walking tours through the sites & neighborhoods I visited. For such a small book, it actually packs quite a bit of detail. Very happy with this purchase!

Have used Top Ten for other cities and loved it. Small size can fit in pants pocket, making it easy to take with you. Great for visiting the tourist sites. Proposed tour routes to visit the major attractions is very useful. Book focuses on the sites and not so much on lodging or restaurants, which other tour books are better at.

Used it on a recent weekend trip to Toronto. Very useful guide and provided plenty of guidance for us to see the sights and get around the city. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Toronto and the Top 10 guide helped us find our way.

Eyewitness Travel books are always good. This one is compact and has a nice pull out map focusing on Downtown.

It’s filled with *so* much that most people probably don’t know about Keller, and really covers the span of her life, instead of just covering just the basic (and most typically known) facts about her life.In addition to this, it’s chock full of pictures, and made very well, too; the thick, glossy pages will last through many, many readings, and certainly add to the visual appeal of the book, as well.I was just delighted with this book. So was my daughter.

While this series is designed to be useful to younger readers in learning about the lives of famous people I found HELEN KELLER: A PHOTOGRAPHIC STORY OF A LIFE by Leslie Garrett to be very satisfying as an adult. The pictures are wonderful but the text is also outstanding. I would highly recommend this to be used by families who want to interest their children in learning. Along with the film THE MIRACLE WORKER this would provide an excellent insight into the life of a very inspiring person and to those who taught her.

These books are great for my third graders! They use these for their big biography projects and they offer tons of great info!

Helen Keller was a strong intelligent woman. She has been an inspiration to me since I was in grade school. I introduce my students to her every year. This book contains many photos I'd never seen and is a nice biography of her life.

I had always been captivated by the concept of her life. Then, years later by sheer coincidence, got involved rescuing deaf blind dogs. I had to know what their lives are like. So I started reading Helen, as many people who have these dogs name them Helen or Keller. I was astounded, dumbfounded, beyond moved, by her JOY OF LIFE! My biggest fear was that I was not understanding the dark and silent world my dogs inhabit, and having delved vicariously into their thoughts, I understand they do have silly joy, amazing intelligence, and ABILITY.Helen will always be a motivating force in my life.This woman accomplished far more than one thousand sighted hearing humans ever dreamt of.

Loved that book ! It was filled with amazing photos of her and her past home, school, and friends who she trusted and much more. A truly inspirational story of her life that inspired me deeply that I knew not . She is truly my inspirational that I honored her so much and thanked her for her hard working to help and donated handicapped people what they needed .

On the plus side, this book is an in-depth investigation of a tremendously interesting historical juxtaposition that weaves together some of the most important threads in mid-20th century history. On the negative side, while the author is able to compile some fascinating observations, she is not able to build any sort of larger meaning from the account. The other good news/bad news is the author is a careful researcher and fine writer, with dual qualifications (German and Alabamian) to investigate and understand this story; but she adapted it from her PhD dissertation and left in some turgid theoretical stuff that will not endear her to general readers.There are three knocks on the German rocket scientists who followed Wernher von Braun from building anti-civilian missiles for the Nazis, to building anti-civilian missiles for the US, to building the rockets that took us to the moon. I merely list these without comment, I have no idea what kind of choices I would have made under the conditions they faced in life. First is that some seem to have been early and enthusiastic Nazis. Second is that some seem to have personal involvement with horrors, primarily mistreatment of slave laborers but also denouncing and persecuting of Jewish colleagues and other crimes. Finally, it's morally dubious enough to use extreme professional skills to kill innocent civilians for one regime, if when that regime falls you do the same for the victors, people have a right to suspect you'll kill for anyone willing to pay you (as Tom Lehrer put it, "'In German oder English I know how to count down, und I'm learning Chinese,' says Wernher von Braun.")The author probes the attitudes of both the rocketeers and local Alabamians to these issues, a little on the first, a lot on the second and only briefly on the third. Unfortunately, she is only able to get superficial reactions. This is interesting in itself, even fifty years and more later, it's hard to have deep conversations with survivors of the era about such issues. A philosopher or lawyer would probe more deeply. If someone claims to have been forced into an evil action, that means the person doing the forcing was doubly evil: both causing evil and forcing another to participate. So the person using this argument should point to some greater sinner, either individual or systemic. After all, some really, really bad stuff happened, and it's impossible that no one and nothing is to blame. Without these kinds of hard follow-up questions, we don't learn much about either the history or morality, only that almost everyone prefers not to insist on clear answers.Nevertheless, this material is very interesting. We have plenty of intense interrogations over issues like these, but far less material of people voluntarily discussing them at a distance in time such that there seem to be few likely consequences of admissions. The author made attempts to get opinions from black and Jewish Alabamians, but they seem to have little interest either way (younger Jewish people who were not adults during the period have clearer positions, but they don't seem to be much different from similar people in other places). It's hard to know if this is genuine uninterest, or if the author failed to gain their trust.Another issue is the complicity of US authorities in covering up some Nazi crimes in order to exploit scientific talent; and arguably reversing course in the 1980s and using pressure tactics and dubious evidence to harass the same people in retirement. Again, I merely list the charges, I'm not taking sides in these complex issues (okay, I guess I am, I'm against government lying, and two wrongs don't make a right, but some of the scientists involved were pretty unsavory, even by their own accounts). Here the author goes a bit off the deep end, comparing letting someone into the US to work and then expelling them when they were no longer useful to working innocent people to death in slave labor camps. She does not suggest that these are morally equivalent, merely that they have parallel elements, but I think is a false and offensive analogy.Another misdirected analogy that is more central to the book is Nazi war crimes to both black slavery and Jim Crow laws in the South. Slavery is not comparable, because virtually no one living in Alabama at the time had ever participated in it, you can't compare some historical cultural guilt with personal war crimes. Jim Crow laws were fading at the time the rocketeers moved in (racism, of course, was still alive and well), but for the vast majority of the population these crimes were simply not comparable to Nazi horrors. There were certainly people in Alabama who had participated in lynchings, or blew up churches with people inside, or acquitted people who lynched or blew up churches, but throughout history there were about 3,500 black people lynched in the US, versus 11 million murdered by the Nazis (not counting war deaths or indirect deaths), mostly in two years. Without defending lynchings, there is a difference between choosing to live in a society where some people get lynched, versus building WMDs to defend a regime with a massive network of death camps.These excursions into extreme moral equivalence do not detract from the interest of the book. Despite the author's writing skill, the book is not a lot of fun to read, partly due to occasionally intrusive theory and partly due to the amorphous material. But it contains a wealth of interesting data about a fascinating cast of characters in a unique time and place. It will enrich your thinking, without pushing it in any particular direction.

I'm a homeschool mom of 4. I'm really excited about this book. We were borrowing the previous version from the library until this one came to our doorstep. The images are so much more vivid and beautiful. It's quite an improvement. My son enjoys flipping through the pages and reading the information. This book is VERY well put together in classic Kingfisher style.

My children have loved this addition to our homeschool library. It has been a life saver for my two boys doing Classical Conversations Challenge A & B. They use it weekly for their research topics. Science is my least favorite topic and thus I felt we needed an encylcopedia to give us a science resource we needed at our fingertips.

This is our science centerpiece book for our homeschooled grammar stage kids. The plan is: we read a couple of pages appropriate to grade level (first is biol; second is earth sci/planetary sci; third is chemistry; fourth is physical science/computer science). The kids make a timeline of major events in science history (invention of microscope; "discovery" of gravity, etc.). We then head to the library for more books on the subject (ooh, dinosaur books...). Later, it's reports or dictation (again, based on grade level) and, after a couple of weeks, on to the next topic.This is a great science book to use as the basis of your curriculum because it's all there in one book. Rather than purchasing a different curriculum (with worksheets, etc.) for each grade, this book is used for all four years. Greatly reduces your costs!Good book, well put-together. See Well Trained Mind for more info on homeschooling your kid.If you're not homeschooling, this book is a great way to cement the cracks in the education your kids may be receiving. Quite frankly, it's a great way to learn stuff YOU might have missed.

A must have for your library. This is a wonderful tool for homeschool families. But for any family for that matter with children who need to do reports or dig in for a certain topic.

This is exactly what I was looking for to compliment our Homeschool library for Science! My daughter is in 3rd grade, so we should be able to plenty of use from this book.

This is a very thorough book and includes many pages of interesting information. I just wish I could keep it, but I am giving it as a Christmas gift to my nieces. They are 10 and 7 and love everything about science, chemistry, how things work, etc. Should keep them busy for hours. And will be a great reference tool as they get older.

So glad I purchased this for our home reference library. Love the way it's laid out and all the information. Saves us trips to the library and gives my child another bibliography reference for her science papers.

My son LOVES to pick up this or it partner history boom and just read them! Amazing homeschooling book

I don't know how many years ago I first read Robin William's "A Mac is not a Typewriter." It started me thinking from a designer's point of view. I've read several of her books since and recommend them to my students, this one especially.This book is an excellent introduction to typography, and using typography in design for a beginner and a good refresher for the more experienced. Williams explains technical terms with a lightness and ease I envy. She makes good design concepts seem obvious not obscure or difficult. This is an excellent primer and reading it would benefit countless self-trained desktop publishers.

I have no graphic design background, but have always been interested in pursuing it as a hobby and/or freelance opportunity eventually. This has been an incredible resource for me as a beginner.It has tought me tons about fonts, colors, layout ideas, designing business card and other business forms, and so much more, it'd be impossible to list it all. The way the author lays out the book makes all this new information so easy to comprehend, and that is one of the things I like most about the book.I am always going back to re-read and look at ideas and info when I'm working on designing different things.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in graphic design.

I learned a lot from this book. I can hardly believe some of the one-star comments: “pretensious and cocky,” "no help,” “written for a 3-year old.” I did not see any of that. If you didn’t attend graphic design school and want to make your designs ten times better, this book is amazing. The author breaks down four simple concepts and then shows you step-by-step examples to help you to apply those concepts. I’ve been looking for a book like this for years because I wanted to understand design better without needing a degree and I can see how the concepts could apply to other areas of visual design as well. This book also has font tips—wow—which have totally changed my typing life. Great book.

If you need to do graphic design and are not professionally trained, buy this book and read it. It was a fast, easy read with lots of before/after pictures to illustrate applying the principles she teaches. My own work has improved dramatically after doing this work. I was a competent amateur, but now what I'm producing looks better, and I have the words to explain how and why it is better. This book was worth every penny, and it's not particularly expensive to begin with.

This is an awesome book. The author clearly builds on proper design principles using outstanding examples of poorly and properly designed bulletins, personal stationary, postcards, resumes, etc. Although I have been using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign (formerly Pagemaker for years), I have a lot to learn about graphic design. Considerable emphasis is placed on the focus for the particular design followed by four easily understood design principles. The last one-half of the book concerns use of type.The book does not and should not teach specific brand-name computer applications.This is one great book. Seriously. I highly recommend the book to any beginner or low intermediate designer. Thank you very much.

Pretty good book for the novice designer and it will improve your design skills after applying the principles in the book. Easy to read, follow and understand, it also has good tips and tricks to make your design work look better and more professional. The chapter on color is really good and the chapter on fonts shows you there's more to a font than meets the eye. Highly recommended if you have no design background and need to do your own newsletters, flyers etc.

As someone prepping for a continuing ed design program, I wanted to get my hands on some basic knowledge of graphic design. This book is exactly what I needed, and covers the principles of design in short, sweet, and accurate detail. Coming from a more technical background I appreciate how succinct this book is and clearly lays out the point and purpose of what you need to accomplish.You won't come away as a design master from this book, but it is a wonderful intro to the field of graphic design principles and I would highly recommend it for newbies, or those simply interested in learning graphic design principles for their own personal projects.

I am a software developer, and I have always felt sort of oblivious to anything involving aesthetics. I've been fortunate to work with good designers, but I decided it was time to learn a bit for myself. I asked a designer colleague for a book recommendation, and she suggested this one.It was perfect for me. The book focuses on design as a means a effective communication rather than just a way to make pretty things, and that works a lot better for my brain. The examples are very clear, and the iterative improvements from one design to the next are so clear that even I can tell that they look better (and understand why). The writing is equally effective and easy to consume. It only took me 4-5 hours for my first pass through this book.After finishing the book tonight, I set out to improve my resume. 90 minutes later, I'm shocked with the results. I used to think my old one looked fine, but now I can see so many design flaws in it. The new version, well, I'm sure there's still plenty wrong with it, but looks better than anything I thought I'd ever create on my own.

Great to see an update of this book. The first edition really helped me learn and understand the principles of graphic design. If you work through this book, and apply the design principles to your work, you will definitely learn something about graphic design. Robin Williams also adds a lot of new material to the fourth edition, so you're not really buying the same book again. I'm looking forward to working though this edition as well.
