A little humorA little historyA little etymology Just one point . I've been watching the History channel Ancient Aliens program and I have come to the conclusion that humans did not have a sense of humor or an imagination until sometime in the 1600s. I'm still working on the exact date though. So any puns prior to the 1600s was the result of alien interaction with humans. This continues to be the reason so many humans don't find puns funny. And that's why aliens have turned to crop circles and probing humans.

This book delivers more than you would expect . I guess I sort of expected a couple of funny stories and a bunch of puns. Does a great historical retrospective on punning.

This book is really a history of verbal humor. Yes, it centers on the pun and the categories in chapter one are well thought out (but really, the superfluous details in a shaggy-dog story are essential--for example, the listener needs to think that the pinkness of the knick-knack elephant is important). The useful endnotes and bibliography show that the book is well-researched. And it's fun to read! The example puns are spot on, and the author's own puns are liberally sprinkled throughout. This is stimulating non-fiction at its best.

Very interesting book on the history of the pun. Did you know the bible is full of puns? There are also some great puns in the book. A delightful read for anyone who enjoys learning things or just enjoys puns.

This is not merely another fly-by-night volume listing a series of groaners, but the story of how puns came to be immersed in every plane of our lives - from classic literature to gourmet ice cream flavors. John Pollack pilots through a fast-paced lesson in the evolution of verbal communication, shooting down those nay-sayers who would claim that puns are the lowest form of humor. Lovers of language will cruise through this book with pleasure. The author maneuvers skillfully through history, displaying his maverick skills with wordplay. A jester to the end, he leaves us with stingers at the turn of every page. Simultaneously a skilled professional in repartee and a scholar of the intricacies of language, John proves why he has earned the title of Top Pun.

Absolutely my favorite book. I can't help but STRESS that. Puns for anyone who dislikes, likes, and doesn't even know it yet, this book is for them.

This is a really thorough and well organized history of puns and word play. I really enjoyed the history of the attitudes surrounding islands and all the examples of its use outside of humor. It also makes me want to go and enter the plan contest. We’ll see in 2019!

A wonderful adventure through language and history. Fascinating hypotheses involving the true nature of word play, humor and the essences of such endeavors involving the shaping of not only language but the characters and character of those characters who use language. Order that seems necessary in language gives way to a healthy respect for a controlled type of disorder that is necessary for language, knowledge, creativity and imagination to grow in human societies. Though Pollack intelligently recognizes and acknowledges that puns are not the only tools towards such ends, he makes a very convincing case that puns and the ability to pun are indeed authentic devices in regards to fostering better thinking and likewise human creativity and invention, so important for human growth and scientific advancement over time. What's more is that he does this all in a highly readable and entertaining fashion. Unlike a typical scientific treatise, as this most certainly is, the bonus is that the subject matter are puns. So, interspersed with important and serious arguments are the subject of those arguments themselves that kept me smiling, sometimes laughing out loud.I flew through this book that at times made me think deeply and at others, once again, made me laugh out loud. I highly recommend it to anyone who speaks. All the best, Al Lemerande Jr. M.D.
