I highly recommend you read the full series from the beginning, as to know all that has come before! I love the series and each one contains an excellent mystery. Each has had me guessing & I was wrong every time! I wonder if you can solve the mysteries before the end.As I hate spoilers, I will tell you things that won't give anything away. What I will tell you is how excellent the writing happens to be, superb! The descriptive talents of Ms Archer is the writing craft shown at its best. She can describe things so well that one can see the scene with the eyes closed; hear the sounds of whistles, shouts, and carriage wheels; smell the scents, feel the chill or heat, dirt and smut, & taste the tea! The dialogue is believable, natural, and well developed. The humor will come at the most unsuspecting times, causing one to laugh out loud. And, there is danger, love, heartbreak, jealousy, fear and murder. All together it makes for a fascinating read one cannot put down.I encourage you to begin at the beginning, but if you have followed Ms Archer's Glass and Steele books right along, you must have The Cheater's Game! I got the uncomfortable feeling that this book was a "filler" in the series in order to set up future writings. Among many hints of things to come, we are given a murder that appears to be only tangentially related to magic use. A member of the visiting American wild west show is shot after what may have been a crooked card game. If I were a detective, I would have spent a lot more time looking at the people he lived and worked with than the handful he might have met in London. Had the troupe been in the city more than a matter of days? Then there was a scene when India has the perfect opportunity to tell all to Matt, and she did not. How can this bode anything but trouble for the future of their marriage? There is also a lot of talk about how she is a great magician, but not once in this story does she use it. And what is Cyclops' problem? He's an American with a past? Seriously? Is that what stands between him and happiness?? Buck up! Still, I will purchase the next one in the series and hope it is much, much better.
I've always been a fan of the Glass and Steele books, but the last couple haven't won me over as hard - almost like the storyline was being too drug out. But The Cheater's Game redeemed itself and I remember why I loved India, Matt, and the gang so much. I love that we get a slight glimpse at the 'wild ward's and that some historical faces make an appearance - it fits our American characters and adds a little extra to the story. I feel that Willie really is starting to become a stronger character that still leaves you wondering what exactly she's up to. My only true complaint is the overall ridiculously short timeline of the series - I understand for part of the series it helped drive the urgency of a certain situation, but it still seems less believable because so much has occurred in only a few months.
I wasn’t so thrilled with this book. Maybe because I hate Kong series, money does matter. This book had another case that Glass & Steele had to investigate (give me a break), although they kept talking about the wedding I was thinking that it wasn’t going to happen in this book. However, the wedding did happen but they rushed it through the end. She didn’t describe the wedding at all, only the “after the wedding†I was disappointed again.
I love India and Matt in this one, so sweet. Willie is hilarious as always. I love the character development. The mystery was good too. New and intriguing people are introduced, and while some secrets are revealed, others will continue to come bite the characters in the ass in the next installment. Can’t wait!
As with many series, authors resort to successful plot formulas - and this book is no exception. However, i really like the characters, the author's descriptions are richly detailed, and the series' continuity is smooth. I impatiently await each new book, read it all night, then impatiently await the next.
Once again the flow of the story just keeps pulling you in. I've read all of the books in this series, and can't wait for the next. I'd recommend them to anyone who enjoys a good historical mystery with wonderful characters descriptions.
This book in the series is not as good as previous books. The newer characters are flat, there are grammar errors, and the author mixes up Draper and Cocker in the story. It was more difficult to stay interested, and I found myself skimming several times.
