Review
Laced with anecdote and opinion..Very readable, and most useful for anyone looking at small boats for extended cruising. -- Cruising World Magazine, May 2000Through boat reviews and advertisements, sailors are bombarded with product information about new boats in sailing magazines. They can tour new boats to their hearts content at boat shows. And they can compare these vessels in annual directories of sailing manufacturers and distributors. Eager vendors will readily send sales literature on request. But what of those of us who have elected to sail those boats euphemistically referred to as gently used or previously sailed? These boats, of course, are affordable, often well-equipped, and typically in sailaway condition without extensive commissioning. So how do you make comparisons and determine which of these boats is right for you? John Vigor has selected 20 from a vast field of older sailboats and offers comprehensive reviews and rating scales for comparison. His criteria for selection were that the boat must be seaworthy enough to go offshore and small enough to be easily handled by two. The boats he selected range from 20 to 32 feet. Lin and Larry Pardey, who have circumnavigated twice in sailboats less than 30 feet in length, argue that small and simple boats are better for voyaging couples. They have noted that large vessels are often the cause of abandoned cruising dreams. Theyre too expensive and thus steal too much from the cruising couple without the assistance of additional crewmembers or power devices that can fail at the most critical moment. Larger, more complicated, sailboats have more systems that break, testing the skills of even the handiest. Their advice in sum is to go small, go simple, and go with the confidence that comes of handling it yourself. In this book, John Vigor offers sailors a collection of 20 boats capable of taking you anywhere perhaps not in the comfort and style touted by new boat product literature but safely and with dignity. John has raced, crossed oceans, and cruised coasts. His views are fresh and insightful. He has the credentials to know a boat for what it is. Readers will be rewarded with valuable information that is more timeless than trendy. Lurking behind it all is Johns wry humor that steps in at just the right moment to remind us that logic has its limits and owning and sailing these vessels is meant to be fun. If we are patient, todays new boats will become older boats. When the best small ones have proved themselves by crossing oceans safely and in style, John may select from among these and write another book. -- Karen Larson and Jerry Powlas,Publishers of Good Old Boat magazine

Perfect book for anyone entertaining the thought of circumnavigating or even coastal cruising in a boat shorter than 30' LOD. Vigor guides you through 20 small boats capable of tackling bluewater. He isn't a salesman and cautions readers that even though the Catalina 27 is in the book it might not be wise to take it around the world without serious outfitting and preparation. Likewise he is conscious of the light wallet problem, and offers estimates for the cost of the vessels new and used. The pages of this nifty little starter book turn quickly and like bellows spur on the little dream we have of cruising without paying for it. On the downside I wish he'd included additional costs related to outfitting - something yachts in this size range certainly need. Also the illustrations are bare bones. Some three dimensional cross sections would have been appreciated and gone a long way to augmenting his prose descriptions. Lastly I was hoping for am epilogue or conclusion with Vigor's personal favorite or closing remarks, but instead you're shown the door by an unannotated bibliography. Note that this book is aging. What he calls old is now about 15 years older as of 2015. Overall it's an informative, enjoyable book for anyone whether you want to sail in bluewater or in daydreams.
Not all these boats are inexpensive and none are cheap, but John Vigor gets a gold star for walking the potential skipper through many choices available for those who dream of doing more than daysailing, but who have not managed to command a Fortune 500 retirement nest-egg.The treasure of the book is not just the specific choices Vigor recommends (some I yearn for, some I can pass on...), but rather because he describes in good detail why he made each selection. What is the type of ballast, construction, comfort available and storage capacity -as well as, very importantly, what is the vessel's actual track-record for voyaging. Although these are all smallish boats but contemporary standards, where one seemingly needs at least 50ft to be acceptable to make the jump across from Florida, Vigor is not writing about blue-water sailing as a trivial exploit or cheap stunt, but as a serious seamanlike endeavor worthy of serious contemplation and using serious tools - which the vessels he recommends generally are. This is a pocket-sized book, but crammed with useable information for a skipper researching reality-sized craft for whatever reason, and is highly recommended for those on a budget or those who have done their time on larger craft and are returning to something a bit more gracious, nimble and enjoyable - all without giving up on the penchant to see what is over the horizon.
The book was quite informative for a first-time sailboat buyer. I learned a lot of what to look for in ocean capable boats and can now hold a decent conversation on the topic. In the end I bought a 1980 Catalina 27' with plans of sailing the Caribbean. This book is critical for any first-time buyer and is very often cited sailing forums. Highly recommended!
I've had this book for a few years and while I originally read it for information, now I keep it under my pillow as a guide to dreaming. I've sailed an Albin Vega extensively and offshore, and I own a Catalina 22 (not quite covered in the book, but a sister ship of one reviewed, the 27). The descriptions are sound, but the real value is in narrowing the scope of all the production boats in the world to just 20. It gives the brain some purchase for really thinking out what it wants and needs. Of course, this book is for making a shortlist to research further, not for deciding on a boat to acquire.
Great little book, clear and fairly comprehensive. The author strikes you as someone who has been around boat for a while and have sailed most of the more traditional, moderately heavy displacement, longish keel sailboats with waterlines below 30ft or so. He draws from his experience and describe the vices and virtues of most boat in this group, including cost at the time the book was written, and its availability. Definitely worth having in you library if you enjoy long trips in small sailboats.......
This is a delightful book to pore over even if -- like me -- you do not expect to buy a sailboat anytime soon. (The book sits by my bedside.) The writing is engaging, the boat schematics are beautiful and simple, and the right parameters are covered and compared for all of the boats. Scanning through this book over and over will spur prolonged reflection on what characteristics are really most important to you in a boat. I keep changing which one is my favorite.
Very good information. The best boats
Very detailed, well written and organized. Author utilizes input from actual owners of the vessels he describes. Extremely useful for anyone seeking to purchase their first sailboat or upgrade from the one they currently own.
